Fractions Jeopardy Vocabulary Ordering Comparing Word Problems BONUS:
Adding $100 $100 $100 $100 $100 $200 $200 $200 $200 $200 $300 $300 $300 $300 $300 $400 $400 $400 $400 $400 $500 $500 $500 $500 $500

1 - $100 The part of a fraction that represents the pieces of a whole – it is Never Under. What is the numerator?

1 - $200 The part of a fraction that represents the total number of pieces in a whole – Down. What is the denominator?

1 - $300 Words that describe the symbols <, >, and =.
What is Less Than, Greater Than, and Equal To?

1 - $400 Two or more fractions have this when the number of pieces in the whole is the same. What is a like denominator?

1 - $500 The name for a fraction that has a numerator that is larger than the denominator – the fraction equals more than one whole. What is an improper fraction?

2 - $100 Order the following fractions from least to greatest: 1/2, 1/6, 1/4 Answer: 1/6, 1/4, 1/2

2 - $200 What is wrong with the following number line?
There are 6 “pieces” between 0 and 1, so the fraction at the first point should be 2/6 or 1/3, and the fraction at the second point should be 4/6 or 2/3. 1/2 would be marked at the 3/6 point:

2 - $300 Explain how you know that 1/3 is less than 1/2.
When a whole is spilt up into 3 pieces, one of those pieces will be smaller than a piece of a whole that is cut into 3 pieces.

2 - $400 Draw a number line showing 1/8, 4/8, and 6/8

2 - $500 Write a mathematical sentence using the following fractions: 4/8, 1/2 4/8 = 1/2

3 - $100 Name a fraction that is larger than 1/2. 3/4, 9/16, 7/8, etc.

3 - $200 John says that 1/5 is greater than 1/2 since 5 is greater than 2. Is John right or wrong? Why? John is wrong. When a whole is spilt into more pieces, one of those pieces is smaller. Also, we know that 1 is half of 2 and 1 is less than half of 5, so 1/5 is less than 1/2.

3 - $300 Identify the fractions represented by the images below and state which is larger: 5/8 and 1/3 – 5/8 is larger than 1/3

3 - $400 Write a mathematical sentence, using fractions, that represents the following: I have 12 shoes. 4 of them are black and 8 of them are brown. 4/12 < 8/12

3 - $500 Identify the fraction represented by each image and tell which is smallest and which is largest: 1/4, 1/3, 8/10 (or 4/5), 2/5, 3/5, and 5/10 (or 1/2) 1/4 is smallest and 8/10 (or 4/5) is largest

4 - $100 Sue has a pizza that is cut into 4 pieces, and Sara has a pizza that is cut into 5 pieces. The pizzas are the same size. If I can only choose one piece of pizza, and I want the biggest piece I can have, which pizza should I choose? Why? I should choose Sue’s pizza. Her pizza has 4 pieces and Sara’s has 5. Sara’s pieces will be smaller since there are more of them. I will get a larger piece of pizza if I take a 1/4 piece instead of a 1/5 piece.

4 - $200 A class of 22 students went to the school library. 14 students checked out books. What fraction of students did not check out books? 8/22 or 4/11

4 - $300 In Mathcity, there are 15 restaurants. 10 of the restaurants serve hamburgers. 4 of the restaurants have tacos on the menu. At two of the restaurants, you can older a milkshake. At what fraction of the restaurants can you order a milkshake? 2/15 – There are 15 total restaurants and 2 have milkshakes

4 - $400 There were 11 students in a swimming pool. 8 got out. What fraction of the students were left? 3/11

4 - $500 Austin had 12 Skittles. 2 were green, 3 were orange, 4 were red, and 3 were purple. What fraction of his Skittles were orange? 3/12 or 1/4

5 - $100 Can the fractions 1/2 and 1/4 be added as they are? Why or why not? No. To add fractions, they must have like denominators. 1/2 and 1/4 can be added by changing 1/2 to 2/4. 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4

5 - $200 Explain how pizzas were used in class to add fractions without like denominators. Give an example. Using pizzas with different fractional parts, we were able to see how many pieces would be created by putting different sized pieces together. Example:

5 - $300 Create an addition problem where the sum would be equal to 6/9. 1/9 + 5/9 2/9 + 4/9 3/9 + 3/9

5 - $400 Jack says that 3/5 + 1/5 = 4/10. Is Jack right or wrong? Why?
Jack is wrong. When we add fractions, we do not add the denominator, since the denominator only tells us how many pieces the whole is divided into. We only add the numerator, which tells hows many pieces that we have to add. 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5

5 - $500 Susan bought two Large pizzas, one cheese and one pepperoni. Each pizza had 8 slices. 6 pieces of cheese and 4 pieces of pepperoni were eaten. What is the fraction that represents the total amount of pizza that is left? Susan started with 8/8 pepperoni pizza and 8/8 cheese pizza. 4 pieces of pepperoni were eaten: 8/8 – 4/8 = 4/8 pepperoni left. 6 pieces of cheese were eaten: 8/8 – 6/8 = 2/8 cheese left. 4/8 + 2/8 = 6/8 or 3/4 of a full pizza is left.
