3 Palm Scanning SAFE Palm Scanning (Secure, Accurate, Fast, Effective)
UW Health Is implementing a Palm Scanning biometric identification SystemPalm scanning is more accurate than either fingerprints or a personal-identification number. It helps ensure patient safety by identifying each patient quickly and accurately and matching that patient to his or her electronic health record. It is especially useful in a large system with multiple patients with the same name – we have more than 160 Mark Johnsons in our system and a few have the same birthdate Hardware takes a biometric imprint of palm/vein architecture Uses near infrared light to create the image based upon blood flow Vein pattern is more accurate than a fingerprint Integrates with EMR for seamless flow of data Patients coming to UW Health will be asked to present photo identification the first time and then to place their palm on the scanner for less than a minute so the pattern of blood flow can be captured. The scan is stored digitally, not as an image, so it is secure and cannot be stolen. The scan is not stored with the medical record and patients’ health information is not stored within the data file. UW Health is the first health system in Wisconsin to use the SAFE system. Several other health systems on the two coasts have activated the system. In Japan, the banking industry uses palm scanning because it is more secure than a personal-identification number

6 Art Zoobilee On October 22, more than 300 guests gathered for the Art Zoobilee Auction for the wonderful animals that had been roaming the Henry Vilas Zoo all summer. Proceeds from this auction event will benefit American Family Children’s Hospital and the Henry Vilas Zoo and I am thrilled to share that net proceeds for the event are at nearly $100,000.

7 The next morning we had 800, soggy yet enthusiastic Walkers at the Heart Walk
$41,162 in on-line pledges as of today, but that number will continue to grow as AHA works over the next several weeks to input donations collected at the event (check u-connect in a few weeks for the grand total) The walk is supported and endorsed by all three CEOs/organizations The walk recruited teams from UWHC, UWMF and UW SMPH – including med students “Dr. Bucky Students” Our Team captains deserve a HUGE thank you for all of the coordination they do and for coming up with creative fundraising ideas – Chris Collum from u-station coordinated a fundraiser with Chilis, bake sales, red paper hearts, etc Teams of note: Advanced Heart Disease – Dr. Nancy Sweizer – Dan White has raised just under $16,000 single-handedly and is continuing to fundraise Preventive Cardiology – set a goal of $10,000 (CHECK WITH VONDA SHAW, NICOLE MEYER OR ANNETTE NICHOLS TO GET AN UPDATE ON THEIR TEAM) AFCH – Storhoff Family raised $1,763 online and I believe turned in more funds at the walk. Talk to Ann Dodge (cc’d above) about this family – they’re patients of AFCH and have raised a significant amount of money for AHA over the years. Heart Walk October 23, 2010
