Application to Student Teach

Students will apply on-line (https://svsu.tk20.com) to student teach.
Fall application period is November one year in advance. Winter application period is March one year in advance. This is the only time the Database is open.

Placement Process Click on “Save” during the application process and when the application is completed Watch for feedback on application. Beginning April for fall and September for winter, watch for placement or questions about your placement. Contact school within 10 days of receiving placement. Interview with principal and cooperating teacher. Dress professionally Ask questions Start date Subject(s) to be taught School day Clinical Experiences Office. Sample placement – Any and all communication for Clinical Experiences will only go to your SVSU account.

Early Childhood Counties during student teaching include:
Arenac (only Standish) Bay Huron (only Huron ISD) Midland Saginaw Tuscola Huron Genesee Lapeer Placement Options – Region – County choices – Where we won’t place – home school – kid’s school – mom/dad other close relative teaching – any close relative on the school board If Early Childhood, the service area only includes the counties listed in the box.

REGISTER during open registration for the appropriate student teaching class on Cardinal Direct.
TE 420 Elementary Student Teaching (10 credits) + TE 410 Seminar (2 credits) TEMS 422 Secondary Student Teaching (10 credits) + TEMS 412 Seminar (2 credits) TE 460 Special Education Student Teaching (6 credits) + TE 445 Seminar (2 credits) TE 660 Special Education Practicum (4 credits). There is no seminar with this class. – Elementary & Secondary 14 weeks – Early Childhood 8 weeks + 8 weeks – K-12 (Art, Music, PE, Foreign Languages) 16 weeks – SPED 12 weeks – Practicum 8 weeks

Before you Student Teach:
At the time of registration, apply for graduation through the registrar’s office. Periodically visit an education advisor Perform an informal audit through Cardinal Direct Complete all methods classes as well as major and minor classes Take the MTTC subject area test(s) Have a background check including FBI fingerprinting and apply to substitute teach in the school district where you are placed Graduation Fee –Application Fee, Deadline posted on the SVSU Registrar’s website ( MTTC – Subject Area test scores cannot be accepted from the student. – Check with the Office of Admissions & Certification if you have any questions on which test(s) to take. Background Check – $ fingerprinting & processing fee; $45 sub permit – To be completed for the school year when student teaching.

Additional Information
Classes may NOT be taken during student teaching. Information regarding the Student Teaching Orientation will be sent to your SVSU from the address. All communications (placement information, orientation information, etc.) will be made through your SVSU . Commitment – No classes – Student teaching is a full-time job – Must be available after school & evenings – Think about coaching – secondary to teaching – Best plan – don’t work – if it interferes, you’ll have to make a choice. Calendar – Follow school calendar not SVSU calendar. – No vacations during student teaching Seminar – Orientation (typically on a Tuesday) and 2 seminars on Fridays in Saginaw. – 4 small group seminars held on Tuesdays, arranged by supervisor.

Additional Requirements
Current first aid & adult & child CPR certification from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, American Safety & Health Institute, Darev Safety Consultants, Emergency Care and Safety Institute, and EMS Safety Services, Inc. – A complete list of cards that are accepted by the Michigan Department of Education can be found on the web at

Application Preview Your application will be distributed to administrators and teachers for the purpose of securing a student teaching placement. All placements are arranged through the Office of Clinical Experiences. SVSU Students are never to arrange their own placements.

Autobiography Use a word processing program
One page maximum, 40 lines including space between paragraphs 1 ¼” margins and 11 pt. Arial font Format is narrative Weave topics into 3 or 4 paragraphs Double space using hard returns between paragraphs only Avoid using asterisks, dashes, accent marks, and bullets Free of spelling errors or grammatical mistakes – We’ll read for content, but not proofread – Students with applications returned because of errors will not be placed.

Experience with children in schools and/or community settings Work experiences, especially those in which you worked with people College and/or community service activities Talents and skills, hobbies and/or recreational activities, travel Awards, published materials, letters of commendation received Philosophy of education; why do you want to teach? – Not creative writing assignment – Be careful about revealing too much – Don’t be negative.

Education List specific schools including Most recent first
Years attended Year graduated Most recent first Include colleges, high school, junior high/middle school, and elementary school Sample listing – No addresses of schools, just city and state – No phone numbers needed

Academics List all courses taken
Organize list in categories (i.e.; major, minors, professional studies, general education) Include all classes that will be completed prior to student teaching Do NOT include course numbers or grades, just course titles Sample listing

Important Reminders Everything should be free of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes SVSU Students are never to arrange their own placements. Samples Elementary application Secondary application Special education application – Students must notify our office if their contact information changes. Inaccurate contact information could prevent placement. – Students need to let us know if they plan to drop student teaching, prior to placement time. – REMINDER: Applications returned due to errors will not be placed.
