2 Legislative Branch The government branch that has the power to make and change laws AKA Parliament

3 Legislative Branch Federal Level Governor General Senate (Senators) House of Commons (MPs) Provincial Level Lieutenant-Governor Legislative Assembly (MPPs)

4 Legislative Branch – Federal Level
Senate May propose or amend bills passed by the House of Commons Senators must be Canadian citizen over the age of 30 Must own $4000 worth of property and may serve until 75 years old

5 House of Commons Most powerful part of legislative Were elected officials (MPs) meet to discuss and vote on public issues 1. The Speaker- the referee who controls the debate Elected by secret ballot by the MPs

6 2. The Government- party that holds the greatest number of seats in the House of Commons (eg. Trudeau Liberals) Leader of the government (PM) is the leader of the majority party (eg. Justin Trudeau) Introduce bills into the House of Commons for debate and vote

7 3. The Opposition Second largest party (eg. Conservatives) Leader of the party is the leader of the opposition (Ambrose) Role of opposition is to ensure that all views and concerns are heard Duty to criticize government policies and put forward other alternatives

10 The Judicial Branch Branch of government wit power to interpret the law, decide who has broken the law, and what penalties should apply

11 Civil Division (between individuals/groups)
1. Civil Court –deals with the protection of private rights, such as disputes between individuals 2. Small Claims Court- private disputes below $3000 3. Family Court- custody and divorce

12 Criminal Division (offences against public/society)
1. Superior Court- major criminal cases 2. Criminal Court- ordinary criminal cases

13 Appeals Division 1. Court of Appeal – general appeal court
2. Provincial Supreme Court- handles some appeals from lower courts 3. Supreme Court of Canada – handles some appeals from lower courts including provincial supreme court
