1. Going Green at UCT!!!

2. Hello House-Committee ladies and gents
We are here from the Green Campus Initiative (GCI) to tell you how you can help save the world!!! (and tell you how you can go green like this hulky babe)

3. But first, a short story…

4. Once upon a time there was a tree, living peacefully in the rainforests of South America.

5. This tree was home to a whole host of animals and birds

6. It lived alone in peace, enjoying everything that nature had to offer

7. Until one day mankind came along…

8. And I think you know the rest of the story…

9. Infact, I’m sure you already know that the rain forest is being cut down…

11. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earths land surface; now they cover only 6%
Experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years if we continue at this rate.

13. And we all know that the trees are not the only ones that suffer

14. Every day 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitats are destroyed.

16. And of course you know that we’re polluting our air

18. Every year approximately four billion tons of carbon accumulates in the air!

19. And I suppose its not new to you that the polar ice-caps are melting

21. …and the polar bears are drowning

22. And you definitely already know about global warming

23. …and how the earth is getting warmer and warmer

25. ..and what about sea pollution?

27. The sea is where we get our fish – (that’s not healthy!)

28. …and of course you know that we are running out of fish due to over fishing

29. Seven out of ten main commercially targeted marine fish stocks are fished beyond ecologically safe limits.

31. …And you know about the Kyoto agreement that not everyone signed

32. And you know about oil pollution

34. And you know about over-population

35. And you know about litter

36. Cape Town’s landfills will be full in less than 5 years!!!

38. And you know that there is a hell of a lot more environmental damage that has not even been mentioned

39. And you must know that we are slowly but surely destroying our world

40. …yet we sit back and do nothing!?
And we know all this…

41. …its time to make a change!!!

42. Luckily, the change is coming!!! From January 2009, UCT will be recycling. The new system includes all UCT residences.

44. Yes, we need you to get your House Committee to help drive and support the new recycling system.
All we are looking for is one person from each House-Committee to be the recycling representative for their residence.

45. Of Course, we the GCI, are also here to help!
This would entail…
Raising awareness
Attending periodic meetings with Res Life
Promoting sustainable practices in residences
We don’t expect you to do this all by yourself. There are many people in residences who are passionate about the environment and are willing to get involved.
