In 1940, Japan joined the Axis powers (Germany and Italy) Hitler called them “honorary Aryans” In 1941, Japan furthered its empire by taking French Indochina (modern day Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia)

Final straw was Japan’s move into Indochina FDR froze Japanese funds in the U.S. and blockaded the sale of oil to Japan 80% of Japan’s oil came from the U.S. Without oil, Japan would not be able to maintain its empire and it would collapse
