Matter Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space.

Is all Matter the same? Pure Substance: a single kind of matter that has a constant, specific make-up

Elements Elements: a pure substance that cannot be broken down into another substance Made of 1 type of atom

When Atoms Combine Chemical Bond: attraction between atoms, caused by moving valence electrons When atoms combine they form a Molecule: 2 or more atoms held together by a chemical bond. Ex: H2O, CO2, and O2

Compound: a pure substance made of two or more elements (different atoms) chemically combined.
***When a compound forms, the compound has properties that are different from the uncombined elements.*** All compounds have unique properties

+ =

Mixture: two or more substances that are physically together but not chemically combined
***Each substance in a mixture keeps its own chemical properties.*** Two types of mixtures: Heterogeneous: parts are unevenly distributed, see different parts (ex: a salad) Homogeneous: parts are evenly distributed, looks the same throughout(ex: sugar water), also called SOLUTIONS.

Separating Mixtures Parts of a compound are hard to separate (chemical process), Mixtures are easy to separate (physical process) You can use the following methods to separate a mixture Magnetic attraction Filtration Distillation Evaporation
