2 Bill of Rights Bill of Rights: The first 10 amendments to the Constitution.

3 Amendment 1 Freedoms of Expression: Freedom of Speech, Religion, Press, Assembly, and Petition

4 Amendment 1 1. No Government sponsored religion (ex. Church of England) 2. Participate in any religion you want to

5 Amendment 1 3. You can express your opinions verbally
4. You can write your opinions and publish them

6 Amendment 1 5. Peacefully Protest
6. Ask the government to change their mind

7 Amendment 2 Militia: Military force that comes from civilians in an emergency 7. People in the US

8 Amendment 2 8. Have and use guns 9. Taken away

9 Amendment 3 Quartering: Letting soldiers live in your house for free
10. In a time of war, if a law is passed, you can be required to house soldiers

10 Amendment 4 Search & Seizure: Searching and taking something
11. Protects people, house, anything that stores information, and things you own 12. Have to go through a certain process

11 Amendment 4 Warrant: Paper that gives the police permission from a judge to search and seize

12 Amendment 4 13. To get a warrant must have: reason to believe crime was committed, promise the information you are giving is true, where you want to search, and what you are looking for

13 Amendment 5 14. A crime that could be punished by death
15. Can’t be put on trial a second time for the same exact crime

14 Amendment 5 16. Can’t be forced to testify against yourself or confess to a crime “Pleading the 5th”: What someone says when they refuse to answer a question that would make them a witness against themselves

15 Amendment 5 17. Similar to words in Declaration of Independence
Due Process: The rules and procedures the government must follow

16 Amendment 5 18. Rules & procedures have to be followed to take away life, liberty, or property 19. Can’t take property except for Eminent Domain

17 Amendment 5 Eminent Domain: Can only take private property for needed public use, and the government must pay you for it

18 Amendment 6 20. Can’t be put in jail and forgotten about
21. Unbiased jury of people like you decide if you are guilty

19 Amendment 6 22. Have to be told what you are accused of having done
23. Know who is saying you committed the crime 24. Get to have a lawyer

20 Amendment 7 25. You get a jury trial if you are in a civil case in a federal court; rare

21 Amendment 8 26. Bail has to be reasonable for the crime committed
27. Fine has to be reasonable for the crime committed 28. Punishment has to be fair

22 Amendment 9 29. List of rights in the Constitution
30. Aren’t all the rights the people have

23 Amendment 10 31. If the Constitution doesn’t say the US Government gets to do it 32. Or says the states cannot do it 33. Belong to the states/people
