1 New Years’ Resolutions: How can I improve 2nd Semester?
Teachers as Advisors December 6, 2017

2 How did I do in 2016? Here at CCHS, there are five components to your final grade in yearlong classes : Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, and the Final Exam. At the close of this semester, 40% of your grade already is determined. In order to earn the desired grade for the year, you can figure out what you have to make second semester based on what you have done up to this point.

3 How do I calculate my grade?
*Use this chart to help you to set goals for next semester. *For example, if you want to make an overall grade of a B in your English class, and you made a 76 in Q1 and a 82 in Q2, you have a total of 158 points going into 2nd semester. You need 242 points 2nd semester to make an 80 in English. This equals making an average of an 81 during Q3, Q4, and on the final exam. What letter grade do I want to earn? Total Points needed (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Final Exam) A/90 average 90*5 = 450 B/80 average 80*5 = 400 C/75 average 75*5 = 375 D/70 average 70*5 = 350

4 Goal setting – make them realistic!
Use the goal setting worksheet and your grades on Infinite Campus to figure out what kind of grades you need for second semester. Keep in mind promotion requirements to make it to the next grade level (5 credits = 10th grade, 11 credits = 11th grade, 18 credits = 12th grade) Class Q1 Grade Q2 Probable Grade Points Earned in 1st Sem. (Q1+Q2) Desired Final Grade Point Value ( A=450, B=400, C=375, D=350) Desired Grade minus Points earned in 1st Semester Divide previous column by 3 = average grade you must make in Q3, Q4, Exam to earn desired letter grade Is the number in the previous column doable? 10th Lit 76 82 158 400 242 81 Yes! Geom World Hist Chem Span I NJROTC Band

5 What can I do to make sure I am successful in 2017?
Use your time wisely – school should come before social media. Do something at home for every class, even if you don’t have an assignment to complete (i.e. review notes, read the chapter covered in class). Buy or make an agenda to keep up with assignment due dates and test dates. Talk with your teachers! Ask for help and attend tutoring sessions. See if grade recovery and extra credit are options if your grade is so low that you might not be able to pass.

7 The Importance of Positive Attitude and Inclusion
-Discuss the following as a class: Have you ever had a teacher or peer say something positive about you? How did it make you feel? Why is it important to encourage others? How can someone feel when they are left out of a group? Why is it important to make students feel a part of the Cross Creek family?

8 Tell me something good…
Pair up to discuss: -Take five minutes to share with your partner a recent accomplishment, an upcoming special event, or a proud moment in your life.

9 Winter Wondergrams Take a wintergram and write an anonymous special message to someone in the school. It can be a friend, a teacher, or someone to whom you want to spread some positivity. Make sure that you are using words like strong, courageous, smart, creative, kind, or understanding. Try to think outside of your own group of friends.

10 Wondergrams, cont’d Turn your wondergram back into your advisor.
These will be screened to make sure that the messages are appropriate. Positive messages will be delivered before exams. Advisors, please fill one out too!!
