2. Quotation Marks in Dialogue
Use quotation marks at the beginning and at the end of a direct quotation.
Bill said, “My favorite sport is baseball.”
“Do you want to go with me to the park Saturday?” asked Sarah.

3. Divided Quotation Marks
When a direct quotation is divided into two or more parts by explanatory words (he exclaimed, she said, they reported), use quotation marks before and after each part of the quotation.
“I can’t decide,” my sister commented, “whether to see a comedy or a horror film at the theater tonight.”

4. Single Quotations in Dialogue
Use single quotation marks around a quotation within a quotation.
“President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, ‘Major league baseball has done as much as any one thing in this country to keep up the spirit of the people,’” stated Mr. Pennebaker.
“My mom said, ‘No, you may not,’ when I asked if I could attend the concert next month,” Dana explained.
“We will begin reading ‘The Scarlet Ibis’ in class today,” the teacher stated.

Periods and Commas Always Go INSIDE!!!
Questions Marks and Exclamation Points go inside IF the quotation itself is the question or explanation:
“Were you late for class?” I asked.
Who stated the quote, “To be or not to be: that is the question”?
