German troops advance at first but then halted mainly due to cold weather. Army Group North – Leningrad (failure) Army Group Centre – Moscow (forced to retreat) Army Group South – Stalingrad (defeated)

Russians gather 1 million troops and surround the Germans Russians attack and cut off Paulus Germans unable to get supplies, men etc. Significance: First major defeat in Europe and turning point in the war.

Pearl Harbour Americans ban exports of oil and steel to Japan as Japanese had recently conquered parts of China. Dec 1941 Japanese attacked pearl Harbour Significance: America declared war on Japan

Hitler sends troops under Rommel to help Italians British under Montgomery defeat the Germans Americans under Eisenhower arrive and force Germans and Italians to surrender and allies begin their invasion of Italy

Battle of Midway What: Sea battle between American and Japanese
Result: Americans win Consequence: Japanese unable to hold onto the islands it had conquered.

Operation Overlord/ D Day June 6th 1944
What: The invasion of France by the Allies Thousands of boats carrying British, American and Canadian troops land at Normandy under Eisenhower They drove the Germans out of France By August France was free again

Battle of the Bulge What: German surprise attack on the Ardennes region Germans did make initial advances Americans eventually stop them

Defeat of Germany British and Americans bombers flew every night to pour bombs over German cities By 1945 the Russians were entering Germany from the East , the British, Americans and French from the West April 30th Hitler shot himself in bunker in Berlin and the war in Europe was over

End of War New American president Harry Truman decided to use atomic bombs to end the war with Japan Hiroshima – (Little Boy) killed 80,000 Nagasaki – (Fat Man) killed 60,000 Japanese surrendered World War 2 was over
