Pd 3: Must read chapter 2 of Wizard of Oz (4/14 and 15 lessons) Substitute in room for MRT meeting. Might have to have them do Achieve 3000. Pd 4: Must finish chapter 1 of Wizard of Oz and read chapter 2 (4/14 and 15 lessons) Pd 5: Can begin chapter 3 of Wizard of Oz (Must finish the symbols question and the details with the pictures) (4/18 and 19 lessons) Pd 6: Can begin chapter 3 of Wizard of Oz (4/18 and 19 lessons) Pd 7: Must read Chapter 2 of Wizard of Oz (4/14 and 15 lessons)

2 Warm-Up: Take a ¼ sheet. Place any homework on your desk.
Read the following excerpt from Chapter 3: "How far is it to the Emerald City?" the girl asked. "I do not know," answered Boq gravely, "for I have never been there. It is better for people to keep away from Oz, unless they have business with him. Choose one of the following to complete: Choose a word you are unfamiliar with, chunk it apart and use context clues to write a definition for it.  Explain how tutelage and fruitlessly might be associated with this passage. Based on only what we have read of The Wizard of Oz so far, what do you think “Boq” looks like? Use your imagination to draw a detailed picture of him or her.

4 Fluency Open the Word version of The Wizard of Oz. Choose a passage.
Read that passage for one minute. Highlight and count the words.

5 Chapter 3: How Dorothy Saved the Scarecrow
1. What “color” is associated with the Munchkin’s land? 2. In our world, who would the Munchkins be? What group of people? 3. Why would Frank Baum give Dorothy a character with no brain? 4. What “strengths” do Dorothy’s companions provide her? 5. How is the Scarecrow like/ unlike the saying: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me? Bilingual: 1. Use the description of the scarecrow to draw a picture of him. Write at least three labels on your drawing. 2. Use a description of the munchkin’s houses to draw a picture of them. Write at least two labels on your drawing.
