1 What happened?! At your tables you have a set of directions, 2 clear cups of water, a container of food coloring, and a spoon. With your table group you are going to follow the directions and create an observation statement with your table group.

2 Instructions At your table you have 2 clear glasses of water, a small container of food coloring, paper towels, a spoon and a notecard. With your table make observations about the following: The cup of water. The container of food coloring. The spoon. Carefully add 2 drops of food coloring to the cup of water and observe what happens. Write down your observations with your table. Now in your second cup of water add 2 drops of food coloring and use the spoon. Write down your observations. How was the process different this time? With your table discuss what this might relate to in our world today. #5- talk with the class over the spreading on the food coloring. What spreads in our world today?- culture, disease, ideas, people…. What if I told you that the water and the food coloring represent different people groups? The spoon made it occur faster.

3 Cultural Diffusion Inquiry

4 What do these pictures show?

5 Cultural Diffusion Today you will investigating the topic of Cultural Diffusion. On your blank sheet of paper put your name, date, and period. Your title is “Cultural Diffusion” With your table create a definition/explanation of cultural diffusion.

6 Now that you have defined cultural diffusion what examples of cultural diffusion do you see in this video clip? You need at least 5 examples.

7 Cultural Diffusion On your paper create Cornell Notes or a tree map.
With your table group you will investigate the following causes of cultural diffusion. (Define each one with your table group.) Trade Travel War Technology Migration

8 Cultural Diffusion What is cultural diffusion?
What causes cultural diffusion to occur?

9 Ancient Civilizations
Read the following paragraph before you begin your notes. Ancient Civilizations Over a thousand years ago, there were civilizations in the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and China. Each of these regions had very distinct cultures. They had very little to no contact with one another. Since these areas were not very connected with each other they developed their cultures separately. Meaning that they each had unique food, language, dress, tradition religions, and technology. Today, this has changed and many of these areas have similarities to one another.

10 What is Cultural Diffusion?
Diffusion is how something diffuses or spreads. Cultural Diffusion- the spreading of culture traits. For example, when you drop food coloring into a glass of water the food coloring will diffuse or spread throughout the water. Geographers and historians study cultural diffusion closely. They study the patterns that diffusion takes, the amount of time it takes for culture to diffuse, and the effects that diffusion has on a societies.

11 What thinking map do we need?
Identify and describe how cultural traits spread

12 Causes of Cultural Diffusion
What Causes Diffusion? Causes of Cultural Diffusion Trade Exchanging goods, ideas, and other things with nearby nations or people groups Travel Leaving one place to visit another for a shorter time period Technology New inventions and ideas that speed the process of connecting with other areas and makes trade and travel easier Migration The movement of people to a new location; usually a More permanent move War The fighting between people groups usually over resources, religion, or differing points of view Draw a Picture representing Travel Draw a Picture representing War Draw a Picture representing Migration Draw a Picture representing Technology Draw a Picture representing Trade

13 Summary On your notes write a 4 sentence summary explaining cultural diffusion and the causes.

14 Diffusion Experiment- Using the last 3 station cards answer the following questions on the back of your notes page. Who are the three civilizations? What does each civilization have? What happens when one civilization begins to travel or migrate? Or what if a war breaks out between these 2 civilizations? Civilization A travels to civilization B? How would this impact their own civilizations? What are some lasting impacts that could occur? How would modern technology (such as phones, internet, and transportation) impact their diffusion?

15 Civilization A Access to warm clothing made from sheep wool.
Makes pottery from clay found in the area. Eats grains and food made from grains.

16 Civilization B Clothing and fineries made from silk.
Uses strong and good spices for cooking and preserving food. Grows rice for food. Uses porcelain to create daily objects such as bowls, and dishes.

17 Civilization C Uses cotton grown in area to make clothing.
