What caused the Famine? . One of the causes of the Great Irish Famine was a disease called blight. The potato was the only food available to the majority of people in Ireland at he time.

4 FUN FACT This is a picture of a field where they planted potatoes during the famine and they never got to flatten it out because of the blight . It is located in county Mayo.

5 Coffin Ships The National Famine Memorial is a bronze sculpture and was made by artist John Behan and is a coffin ship with rigging of human skeletons and bones. During the years between 500,000 and 1 million people died from hunger. Many more emigrated to the United States and Canada. They crossed the Atlantic in overloaded ships. The conditions were so hard that many people died during the trip, and that is how it got the name "coffin ships". It is estimated that tens of thousands of Irish people died because of the filth and unsanitary conditions on the ships with inadequate clean water and food, causing fever and disease.

7 Famine Sculpture This is a sculpture of Irish people forced to emigrate during the famine and it is located in the Dublin Docklands and was created by Rowan Gillespie. This is a bronze statue of a family comforting one another before setting sail from Sligo Harbour to America.

8 Emigration It is estimated that 1 million people died from starvation and a further 1 million people emigrated during the Famine. Within 5 years the population dropped from 8 million to 6 million.

9 Friends in America. When the rest of the world realised that Ireland was plagued by a famine the United States was one of the first countries to send money.

10 What impact has the Famine had on us in the 21st Century?
The biggest effect was on emigration and the number of Irish people who were forced to leave the country. Now there are thousands of Irish descendants living abroad and St Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world. Ireland is an Island and so we have to travel and open our minds to other cultures and traditions. We are more open minded and friendly to other nationalities.
