2010 City of Oceanside Zero Waste Resolution 2011 Pilot Zero Waste Campaign 2012 Schools written into the Zero Waste Strategic Management Plan 2012 City of Oceanside adopted the Zero Waste Strategic Management Plan 2012 State Legislation, AB341 Mandatory Commercial Recycling, included educational institutions 2013 City of Oceanside funded Zero Waste Initiative for schools 2014 Oceanside Unified School District became the first district in the Nation to adopt a formal Zero Waste Resolution 2016 City of Oceanside audited implemented schools to asses current progress and plan for the diversion of Organics (State of California AB1826)

Phase 1: Meet with Principal and Key Staff (Staff Adjunct, Custodial, Nutrition Services, Noon Duties/ Security) Phase 2: School-wide Waste Audit Phase 3: Results Presentation to Full Staff Phase 4: Individual Classroom Education Phase 5: Support Staff Training- Custodial/Cafeteria Phase 6: Placement of Recycling Infrastructure Phase 7: Post Roll-out Days: Follow-up Waste Audit, Results Celebrate!!

OUSD’s Zero Waste Initiative takes schools from average 20% to 70% recycling rate within one semester! $7,500 average annual cost savings per school
