Paper 1:
Step 1: Read an extract from a novel.
Step 2: Write a summary of what’s happened.
Step 3: Write two paragraphs analysing language using terms.
Step 4: Write two paragraphs analysing structure using terms.
Step 5: Write two paragraphs arguing that one particular theme in the extract is the most important.
Step 6: Write a short story based on the extract that you read.

7. English literature paper 1: Shakespeare and 19th Century Novel
Key skills in both questions:
Students need to make an argument in response to a question about a character or a theme, using terminology and referring to historical context.
They should refer substantially to the extract given but should refer in some detail to the wider text.
30 marks for each question plus 4 for SPAG.

8. English literature paper 2: Modern prose and the poetry
Modern prose: students are given a choice of two questions on a character or a theme. They should make an argument, analysing language, using terminology and referring to historical context. They are not given an extract so they need to know quotations. Poetry part one: Students are given one poem that they have studied and asked to compare it to another poem that is not printed on the paper, analysing language, using terminology and referring to historical context. They should know 2-3 quotations per poem. Poetry part 2: Students are asked a question about an unseen poem, and then asked briefly to compare it to a second unseen poem. They need to make an argument, analyse quotations and use terminology.
