11 MTSD’s New Science Curriculum Next Generation Science Standards with
STEMscopes

12 Matter and Energy in Plants
Grade 5 Curriculum Scopes Earth’s Rotation Objects in the Sky Observing the Stars Matter and Energy in Plants Food Webs Matter Cycles Ecosystems Energy Transfer Gravity STEMscopes calls each mini-unit a Scope. These are the scopes planned for this year for our grade level.

13 Information on NGSS Adoption of this curriculum and the STEMscopes resource is the result of years of work by dedicated teachers. Our district has a web page with information and links to the NGSS site. Go to our school web page and click on “Academics”. You’ll see the screen look like this. Then, in the first column, click on Next Generation Science Standards. (Do this. Show the page. Point out links to NGSS, etc. The parent resources link and support for the standards link are at the bottom of the page. If you want, you may click on any of the links for the parents.)

14 STEMscopes provides top quality, hands-on science
Developed in collaboration with Rice University, STEMscopes provides us with outstanding inquiry, problem solving and active learning opportunities for our students. It is hands-on and technology rich!                                               STEMscopes is our curriculum resource. “Developed in collaboration with Rice University, STEMscopes provides us with outstanding inquiry, problem solving and active learning opportunities for our students. It is hands-on and technology rich.”

15 STEMscopes helps students learn to think like scientists and engineers
Students will learn to think and reason like young scientists and solve problems like young engineers. Math, reading and career connections are woven into the curriculum. stock-images-students-science-class-using-microscope-image (Read slide and comment as you’d like.)

16 Developing Reasoning Skills
Beginning in Kindergarten, we will develop students’ ability to draw conclusions based on evidence and to explain their reasoning: C = Claim E = Evidence R = Reasoning In the early grades, students will state their claim and provide evidence. As they go through the grades, we will develop their ability to explain their reasoning. Speak from the slide.

17 A Balanced Science Curriculum
We planned a balanced curriculum for our students. Every grade level will have Scopes or mini-units for life science, physical science and earth and space science.

18 Hands-on and Technology Rich
Each student will have his or her own online account. Online and print activities, including activities to do with parents, will motivate students to learn more about the concepts they explore at school in hands-on activities. Explain that you will be providing login information to parents in the future.

19 THANK YOU, MTEF! Thanks to a generous grant to underwrite our STEMscopes materials, every classroom has the hands-on materials needed for every student! And thank you to donors like you! Please read this slide and add a personal thank you. :)

20 We’re looking forward to a great year in science!

21 QUESTIONS?? Does anyone have any questions about our presentation?

22 WHAT A GREAT CLASS OF 2025!!! Please head to your child's classroom for a few minutes
