1 Figurative Language Review
How Does SENSORY LANGUAGE CONTRIBUTE TO MEANING?

2 Figurative Language *Figurative Language is any language that has a ‘hidden’ meaning. It does not mean something exactly the way it is said or “literally.” *Authors use this language to deepen the meaning of their message and to add description and interest to their writing! Sensory language is the technique of using words that appeal to your senses: Hear See Taste Smell

3 5 Types of Figurative Language that we will learn… Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Imagery

4 Simile: Comparing 2 unlike objects using the words ‘Like’ or ‘As’
The clouds looked like a patch of cotton balls. The sun shined as bright as a strike of lightning. The Takis tasted hot as fire! The rainbow looked like a bag of skittles.

5 Metaphor: Comparing 2 unlike objects using: “AM,” ‘is,’ ‘Was,” ‘were’
The clouds were a patch of cotton balls. The sun was a bright strike of lightning. The Takis were fire! The rainbow was a mixture of skittles.

6 Personification: Giving an object a human-like trait
The waves sprinted across the shore. The rain cried to the Earth. The wind sang through the night. The sun smiled graciously.

7 Hyperbole: A statement that exaggerates or stretches its level of truth
She ‘s a running cheetah! It was raining cats and dogs! My heart is broken. I’m starving!

8 Imagery: using words to ‘paint a visual picture’ for the reader; describing characters and places
Authors use Imagery to provide a mental picture and image for the readers to enjoy! Her hair sat lazily, upon her shoulders, soft as silk and soaked with dripping drops of water rushing to the floor. The room smelled of gyms socks, sweat, and hamburgers after the basketball practice. *the sensory words add an image for the reader…

9 Daily Assessment QuestionS (DAQ)
On your paper, answer the following questions to check for your understanding: Simile, Personification, Metaphor, Imagery, Hyperbole What key words make up a simile? What ‘base’ or ‘root’ word do you see in personification? When a writer uses ‘sensory details’ (what you see, touch, taste, feel, hear) this is known as ______________. When you are ‘hyper’ you may overly do things! This is a way to remember what a “______________” is in writing. An author ‘exaggerates the truth. When an author uses the words, “is , was or were” to compare to unlike objects, he is creating a _______________.
