5 Career Exploration: Begin with the End in Mind
Education Plans Course Selection Career Assessment Individual Appointment Informational interviews Education level Choice of major/program Choice of school (for transfer student) Academic Advising Maximum relevancy to career and degree The concept of “Begin with the End in Mind” provides a basic orientation for how to navigate the college experience. Career exploration provides a destination, or “finish line,” for coursework completed. Clarification gained through career exploration activities provides clarity about the education planning process. Once clarity is reached for education planning, one has a clear sense of what courses to take currently – but also recognizes the connection between career goals and current courses. These connections foster motivation to succeed academically, and enables the student to develop relationships with employers in the intended career field while completing education requirements.
