2. Introducing APAN
The Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) is a regional network of practitioners responding to the growing and urgent need for climate change adaptation.
APAN is part of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Adaptation Network.
Together with international organisations, development agencies and other partners across the region, APAN serves to equip government officials and other key actors with critical knowledge to design climate change adaptation measures, to access needed finance and technologies, and to build capacity to integrate climate change adaptation into national development policies.
In essence, APAN is Mobilising Knowledge and Building Capacities for Climate Resilience.
This is APAN’s tagline or call to action that allows all to get a sense of APAN’s reason for being.

3. APAN: Network of CCA Practitioners
APAN functions as a network of climate change adaptation practitioners, in a collaborative approach, working to effectively manage and disseminate diverse climate change adaptation knowledge and meet on-the-ground demands of climate change practitioners.

4. APAN’s Mission Statement
APAN’s goal is to assist countries to build climate change resilient and sustainable human systems, ecosystems, and economies.
APAN strives to equip key actors in the region with knowledge for:
designing and implementing adaptation measures,
building capacity to access technologies and finance in support of climate change adaptation, and
integrating climate change adaptation into policies, strategies and plans.

APAN supports climate change adaptation through its four core activities
Knowledge Management helps policy makers and practitioners and influences global dialogues. The APAN Web Portal serves as the region’s primary knowledge platform and resource repository for climate change adaptation practitioners.
Knowledge Synthesis is critical to adaptation. APAN is continually developing its knowledge base with updated information on emerging and priority issues in climate change adaptation.
Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum provides a unique opportunity for a large number of diverse stakeholders to get together to learn the latest adaptation knowledge from each other and to expand their networks.
Sub-Regional and Thematic Conferences, and Targeted and Focused Trainings provide learning opportunities for climate change adaptation practitioners to discuss common and cross-cutting environmental issues such as water and food security and others.

The APAN Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum has been organized for the past three years. The forum has emerged as one of the biggest forum on climate change adaptation in the region.
Over 500 climate change adaptation experts and practitioners attended the last forum in Incheon, Korea. The next forum will be held in October 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Each year, a leading institute or institutions volunteer to host the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum. APAN partners with them to organize the forum.

Who is involved in APAN and how it operates
APAN is one of the regional networks under UNEP’s Global Adaptation Network – or GAN. The other regional networks under GAN are:
The Regional Gateway for Technology Transfer and Climate Change Action (REGATTA) Network in Latin America and the Caribbean
Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network (AAKNet)
West Asia Regional Network on Climate Change (WARN-CC)
APAN is governed by a Steering Committee that comprises renowned climate change scientists and senior government officials and representatives from donor agencies. APAN is supported by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, the Asian Development Bank, the USAID ADAPT Asia- Pacific project and other partners and donors.
Core functions of APAN, such as knowledge management, information and stakeholder outreach services, and technical support, are provided by the Institute of Global Environmental Strategies (IGES); the Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT); the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI); and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Asia Pacific (ROAP).

APAN operates across the Asia-Pacific region in around 48 countries.
For more efficient management of APAN functions, designated leading institutes act as nodes and drive APAN activities in each sub-region and priority themes. Nodes provide technical assistance and capacity-development opportunities.

11. APAN Results and Impacts
Contributing to global policy process:
APAN at COP19 –Need for adaptation networks, KM and capacity building stressed.
Number of APAN training workshops, conferences and forums conducted since 2011
Number of developing country govt officials who participated in APAN events since 2011: 41

Since 2011, APAN conducted a total of 41 training workshops, sub-annual conferences, and forums across a number of climate change adaptation areas.
The number of developing country government officials who participated in APAN events since 2011 totals to around 4,000 people.
Because of these events, awareness on CCA was raised among newer stakeholders. For example, Members of Parliament in South Asia were trained on framing adaptation strategies in public policy-making processes in Islamabad, Pakistan in December A special request was made by participants to conduct similar APAN workshops in each South Asian country.
Following another APAN workshop in September 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal, APAN galvanised cooperation with the Network of Asian River Basin Organisations (NARBO) to improve water security and resilience building in Asia. Discussions are currently underway.
APAN contributes to global policy process
In November 2013, an APAN side event on "Networking for Adaptation Knowledge & Action in Asia-Pacific by Asia Pacific Adaptation Network" was organised at the Japan Pavilion at COP19.
Approximately 35 people participated at the side event. The event included presentation from three of the five sub regions APAN is active in, namely South Asia, Northeast Asia and the Pacific. The discussions focused in the need for adaptation networks, their role in knowledge management and capacity building and also the effectiveness of delivery.
