1 Unit 1 Matter Day

2 Science Starter: Wednesday, August 30th
On your Science Starters sheet, copy the following question and write your response. Be sure to write today’s date. What is chemistry?

3 Let’s number your notebook pages.

4 What is chemistry?

5 What is Chemistry? On your science starters sheet, correct your response/add notes in the corrections/notes box. Chemistry is the study of different substances…how they form and interact with other substances.

6 Plan for Today: Warm-up – Prior knowledge question Essential Question Website tour Group activity “What is Matter?” Begin Unit 1 Vocab. sheets Wrap-up activity

7 Homework: Make flash card for “#1 - Matter” – Use your vocab. sheet. Be sure to write your name on the front of the card, as well as the number and term. Write the entire definition and all additional details. Don’t lose your card. Put it in the Ziploc bag and keep it in the pocket of your binder. Forms-safety contract and syllabus

8 How can I distinguish what is “matter” from what is “not matter”?
On the top line of page 1 in your notebook, write today’s date. On the next line, copy the following: Essential Question: How can I distinguish what is “matter” from what is “not matter”?

9 Let’s tour my website.

10 On the top line of page 2, write:
“What is Matter?” Group Activity

11 Let’s briefly talk over “Cooperative Group Roles”.
Community Principles: Teamwork Respect Participation Personal Responsibility

12 Today’s “Cooperative Group Roles”:
A- Safety Director/Timekeeper B– Group Leader C– Materials Manager D– Technical Manager **Materials Manager: Take the cards from the bucket and hand them to the appropriate group member. Each member needs to quickly read over your role for today’s activity.

13 In order to understand chemistry, we need to figure out what matter is…

14 Explore The cards on your table have “items” written on them.
Work together with your group to decide if each “item” is matter or not matter. Arrange the cards into three columns: Matter Not Matter Unsure Try your best to not have a lot of cards in the “unsure” column. Quickly record your results on page 2 in your notebook. If I move on before you’re done, don’t stress out about it!

15 Elaborate What “item” had the most interesting/controversial discussion for your group? What were things you put in the “matter” column? What were things you put in the “not matter” column?

16 Elaborate What do all of the things in the “matter” column have in common? “Not matter” column? With your group, develop a definition of “matter” based on our discussion. Write it on page 2. Sort the items in your unsure column into the appropriate column based on your definition, and move other items that you think should be moved. (If you wrote in pen, just mark one neat line through the word.)

17 Matter Clouds Soil Water Butter Comet Dissolved Sugar Batteries Dust
Car Exhaust Saliva Ocean Stars Gasoline Ketchup Air Paper Mars Sun Bacteria Smoke Crystals Skin cells Steam Cat Helium Atoms DNA

18 Not Matter Electricity Gravity Moonlight Sound Temperature Sadness
Fear Force Pressure Wisdom Fire Magnetism Heat Light Acidity Wind Love Religion Thoughts Democracy Energy

19 Please insert your vocabulary sheet right behind your “Unit 1 Chemistry” divider and before page 1. Write your name on it and we will begin filling in the information.

20 1. Matter Definition -Matter is anything that has mass (sort of like weight) and volume (takes up space). Additional detail: Air, you, water, atoms, animals, plants, amoebas Additional detail: All matter is either a solid, liquid, or gas.

21 Apply Work with your group to come up with 3 more examples of matter and 3 examples of things that are not matter. Write these on page 2 in your notebook.

22 On page 1 of your notebook, do the following:
Wrap-up: Evaluate On page 1 of your notebook, do the following: Discuss with your group and answer today’s essential question. Name one part of a flashlight that is matter and one part that is not matter. Explain your reasoning.

23 HOMEWORK: Don’t forget to make a flash card for (1) Matter tonight. Be sure to write the entire definition and all additional details. Don’t lose your card. Put it in the Ziploc bag and keep it in the pocket of your binder.
