1 Option 4B: Diverse Places
Topic 4: Shaping Places Option 4B: Diverse Places

2 Enquiry 1: How do population structures vary?
Bear in mind: - Know enough about the location of different demographic and cultural issues to be able to compare and contrast experiences from different places - Always try to recognise how these places are perceived and presented differently, by and for different groups of people. Consider the impact of these representations on experiences of place Learning Objectives: To be able to describe the population pattern of the UK over time To be able to describe and understand how and why the population of the UK has grown unevenly

3 Describe the pattern of population growth of the UK over the last 50 years. Attempt to explain these patterns

4 UK Population change Decade Initial Population
10 year growth in population Annual growth rate (%) 1960s 52,372,500 3,259,700 0.61 1970s 55,632,200 1980s 56,329,700 1990s 57,237,500 2000s 58,886,100 2010s 62,759,500 2020s 67,359,600 3,993,000 Annual growth rate: 10 year growth rate in population/ 10 (to get 1 year) divide that by the initial population and x by 100 for percentage

5 Table 1: UK population estimates and annual growth rate, 1960s to 2020s

6 Population change for the UK
Describe and explain the changing patterns and suggest reasons for them. Discuss the differences between a) London and the south-east b) The north of England Explore reasons why London has grown more rapidly. Between the 2001 and 2011 censuses, the UK’s population increased by just over 4 million (6.9%) Most noticeable area of population decline was in West Scotland, very small patches of decline scattered across England and Wales Coincide with inner areas of some cities Surprising to see the very north of Scotland showing a high percentage increase. However, remember that a high percentage change figure can be produced by a very modest increase in a small existing population growth

7 Various factors that have driven population change
‘baby boom’ Rising economic prosperity of London/ South East 1970s- 1980s economy weakened: higher unemployment With your chocolate bar compare factors that have driven population change Fertility rates decreased, more females entering employment and followed careers Decline of manufacturing industry, collapse of traditional heavy industry

8 Plenary Predict how the population of the UK will change over the next 50 years. Why?
