1 Smarter Balanced Assessment
Paperless! Tech Training - February 12, 2015

2 Let’s Start at the Very Beginning!
or… Once Upon a Time….

3 Who will be assessed and when?
Grade 3 ELA Mar 9 - Apr 23 Grade 3 Math Last 12 weeks of school (Mar 23) Grades 4-8 ELA and Math Grade 10 ELA* Exit Exam Grade 11 ELA* and Math Last 7 weeks of school (Apr 27) *Students in grades 10 and 11 will be administered the same assessment; two cut scores will be applied: 10th grade Exit Exam cut score and 11th grade college and career ready cut score. Note: Science will continue to be assessed through MSP at grades 5 & 8, and Biology EOC at high school

4 What does assessment “look like?”
•Three parts: •CAT – Computer Adaptive Test (online) •Classroom Activity (30 minute activity that prepares students for the Performance Task) •Performance Task (online) •Continuous vertical scale, K-12 •2,000 – 3000 points

5 I understand how supports and accommodations are entered in TIDE
Today’s Learning Targets I can locate resources and applications on the Washington Assessment Portal I can use the basic functions of TIDE: add/delete user; create rosters, print test tickets I understand how supports and accommodations are entered in TIDE I can support a teacher in proctoring a test session I know some basic troubleshooting tips

6 I can assist teachers with the Interim Teacher Hand-Scoring System
NEXT Learning Targets I can assist with the input or upload of settings (designated supports and accommodations) I can assist teachers with the Interim Teacher Hand-Scoring System I can assist teachers with the Online Reporting System I can troubleshoot routine technical issues and know the escalation process for those that cannot be resolved

7 Staff Corner (Research and Tools) → Washington Assessment Portal

8 Where can you find manuals? Where are training modules located?
Evens and Odds! Where can you find manuals? Where are training modules located? How can you access a Practice or Training Test with a guest login? What is the difference between a training test and a practice test? What tools within the portal require a username/password? How do you know? What is the difference between a tool, designated support and accommodation? BONUS 1: How long do students have to complete an assessment? BONUS 2: What is the difference between the interim and summative assessments? Staff Corner (Research and Tools) → Washington Assessment Portal

9 TIDE - Test Information Distribution Engine
TIDE is the “back end” of the Smarter Balanced engine. It stores all the data related to users and students. Examples of actions TIDE is used for include: Adding/deleting users Rostering students into classes Entering supports and accommodations Printing test tickets with each student’s username and password (SSID)

10 TIDE Did you know? The same username/ password is used for TIDE, Test Administration, Interim Teacher Hand Scoring System and the Online Reporting System. Access is determined by User Role: District Test Coordinator District Administrator School Test Coordinator Test Administrator Reference: TIDE User Guide, Page 5

11 Hands-on: Problem Situations Preparation Steps Support Activities
Let’s Do It! Hands-on: Problem Situations Preparation Steps Support Activities

12 Let’s Do It! Problem Situation: A teacher is unable to log in to Test Administration Step 1: Confirm that the teacher is entered as a user in TIDE (View/Edit User) Step 2: If the teacher is not entered, create an account (Add Users) OR If the teacher IS entered, ask him/her to first try using the “forgot password” link on the login page; if that does not work, then send a message to or call and request a password reset

13 Let’s Do It! Problem Situation: A teacher is unable to log in to Test Administration Tip: When you create a user account or the user issues a “forgot password” request, the user will receive a message from MAAC-DoNotReply with a temporary password and link to set up a permanent password

14 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Students Need to be Rostered into Classes Step 1: In TIDE, click the Rosters tab Step 2: Within the Manage Rosters tab, select Add New Roster from the drop-down menu Step 3: Type a name for the roster (Suggestions: Grade-Teacher or Grade-Teacher-Subject-Period; Examples: Grade 3 - Doyle; Grade 6-Volke-3rd-ELA) Step 4: Select the teacher and grade level Step 5: Use the “move in” and “move out” buttons to add or remove students from the roster Step 6: Click Save when done.

15 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Students Need to be Rostered into Classes Tips: Students can be included on more than one roster. Rosters MUST be in place for teachers to see test results in the Online Reporting System. Rosters can also be added using an upload file. The Excel template is available in Rosters - Upload Rosters. Deleting a roster does NOT delete students in that roster. TIDE Users Guide, Section VIII, Working with Rosters of Students (p. 57)

16 Let’s Do It! Problem Situation: While creating rosters, you notice that a student enrolled in the school does not appear in TIDE. Step 1: In the Manage Students tab, search to see if you can find the student Step 2: If the student does not exist, send an to Becky and Shanna to let them know. They will be able to add the student.

17 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Students need test tickets to access an interim assessment or the summative assessment Step 1: In TIDE, click the Student Information tab Step 2: From the drop-down, select the “grade level when assessed” and click Search Step 3: The list of students appears at the bottom of the page. Click the check-boxes next to student name to select students OR click the check box in the banner bar to select all students Step 4: Click the Print Testing Tickets button

18 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Students need test tickets to access an interim assessment or the summative assessment TIPS: Test Tickets are considered SECURE. These tickets should be distributed, collected and stored with security in mind Currently, there is no capability to print test tickets by roster - only by grade, or by selecting specific students. This has been requested as an enhancement. TIDE Users Guide, p. 31

19 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Designated supports and accommodations must be entered to support students who need them to access the assessment. Words to Know: “Tools” are available to all students and can be used at the student’s discretion. “Supports” are also available to all students, but an educator knowledgeable of the student’s needs has to activate the feature for use. “Accommodations” are available to students with a documented need noted in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan.

20 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Designated supports and accommodations must be entered to support students who need them to access the assessment. Two Methods: Manually enter the settings, student by student (TIDE Users Guide, page 26) Upload settings using a TIDE template Excel file (TIDE Users Guide, page 32) All supports and accommodations must be approved by the principal. Guidance on Tools, Supports and Accommodations can be found on the portal. Go to Test Administrators or Test Coordinators - Resources - User Guides and Manuals. Guidelines on Tools, Supports and Accommodations

21 Let’s Do It! Preparation Step: Designated supports and accommodations must be entered to support students who need them to access the assessment. Tips: While “designated supports” can be assigned to any student, they should ONLY be assigned where they have been a consistent part of the student’s instruction and assessment. Otherwise, they are likely to be a hindrance to the student. Supports and Accommodations entered in TIDE will be available to students for both the interim and the summative assessments. Supports and Accommodations will need to be re-entered each school year.

22 Let’s Do It! Support Activity: A classroom teacher requests support for the first administration of an interim assessment.

23 Let’s Do It! Support Activity: A classroom teacher requests support for the first administration of an interim assessment. Let’s take a look at what the teacher and students do during a testing session.

24 Let’s Do It! Support Activity: A classroom teacher requests support for the first administration of an interim assessment. Now, let’s take a look at the interface. It is possible to “simulate” the testing environment using a practice test. While we don’t have student accounts, we can see what the management screen looks like.

25 Let’s Do It! Support Activity: A classroom teacher requests support for the first administration of a PRACTICE or INTERIM assessment. Proctors will log in here to administer a PRACTICE or TRAINING test through the testing interface. Proctors will log in here to administer an INTERIM assessment. This will also be the module used to administer the SUMMATIVE assessment.

26 Let’s Do It! Support Activity: A classroom teacher requests support for the first administration of a PRACTICE or INTERIM assessment. Login HERE. Read the instructions. Start a session. Note the session ID. Stop the session. Note: Student Lookup lets you find a student by ID or name. Use this if a student is having technical difficulty logging in.

27 More to Think About Problem Situation: A student in the testing environment enters their name, SSID, and the session ID as directed. A message pops up on the screen “this session has expired.” What could be the problem? Problem Situation: A student needs to leave their test during the testing session in order to use the restroom. What do they need to do before they leave? Problem Situation: It’s nearly time for students to leave the lab. Three students will not be able to finish their interim assessment. What will you do?

28 One last note about interims...
Two Types of Interims: ICA - Interim Comprehensive Assessment: The comprehensive assessments cover the same claims and range of standards as on the summative assessment for the grade level The comprehensive assessments for ELA and Math include a CAT and a PT. Both must be completed, with some items hand-scored, before a teacher can see results. IAB - Interim Assessment Blocks Blocks focus on smaller sets of targets and therefore are more flexible (they take considerably less time than a comprehensive) Some blocks have hand-scored items that must be scored before a teacher can see results.

29 One last note about interims...
Hand-Scored Items for the Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs) - ELA Each ELA block is different for hand-scored items: Listening, Research and Edit/Revise blocks will have no hand-scored items Brief Write block will be all hand scored Reading Lit and Reading Info blocks will have at least 1, maybe 2 hand-scored items per block All Performance Task blocks have three questions and a full write. Two Research items and a Full Write will be hand-scored. One Research item will be machine scored.

30 One last note about interims...
Hand-Scored Items for the Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs) - Math All the non-PT block items are automatically scored. (None of the items on the non-PT blocks will be hand scored.) The PT block has 6 questions per PT. 2-3 questions per PT block are automatically scored. Only 3-4 questions per PT block will need to be hand scored. PT= Performance Task

31 One last note about interims...
To hand-score items, teachers will go to the Interim Teacher Hand Scoring System after students finish the interim assessment. Once they enter scores for hand-scored items, they can see test results in the Online Reporting System.

32 One last note about interims...
More information about hand-scoring can be found on the Washington Assessment Portal Path: Test Administrators - Test Administration Resources - Modules - Teacher Hand-Scoring System Training District-created materials, including slides and quick-start guides are available in Google Drive here.

33 Once Last Problem... Problem Situation: Students have completed an interim assessment block that includes hand-scored items. When the teacher logs in to Interim Teacher Hand-Scoring, the student’s work is not there. What might be the reason?
