1 Best Material To Make a Bike
By: Mr. Carmichael

2 Titanium Pro’s -Resists Corrosion
-Highest strength to weight ratio (Strong as steel but 45% lighter) -Not a good conductor of electricity (less likely to be electrocuted) -Non-Toxic -Extremely High Melting Point (3,034 degrees F) Con’s -None

3 Aluminum Pro’s -Can be easily shaped/bent
-Is Non-Corrosive (won’t rust) Con’s -Reacts with hot water -Is a soft metal -Is a good conductor of electricity

4 Iron Pro’s -4th most common metal -Can be used to make steel alloys
-Cheap to produce Con’s -Rusts in presence of oxygen and H2O -1000 times weaker than steel

5 The Material that I would Choose is Titanium
Titanium is the material that has the best combination of properties that I want in a bike. It is stronger than steel, but 45 % lighter. It doesn’t rust, this is important to me because I live in Washington and it will get wet at some point. It is not a good conductor electricity or heat

6 The material that I would not choose is Iron
I would not choose iron because it rusts easily, and since it rains a lot in Washington this would not be a good characteristic. Even though it’s cheaper, this characteristic makes it less desirable than titanium.

7 The material I would not choose is Aluminum
I would not choose aluminum because it is a soft metal, meaning it might bend easily if it got hit or there was a crash. Even though it won’t rust, it’s also a good conductor of electricity, and I would not want to risk being electrocuted.

8 Rubric Standard: Crosscutting concepts: structure and function
Structures can be designed to serve particular functions by taking into account properties of different materials, and how materials can be shaped and used.  Exceeding (100%) Meeting response AND: Includes properties of a fourth material Meeting (85%) The powerpoint includes the following information: Properties of three different materials (including pro’s and con’s) Clearly states which material would be best based upon it’s properties States why you would not choose the other materials based upon their properties. Approaching (75%) Includes 2/3 required pieces of information, or partially responds to each Beginning (65%) Includes 1/3 required pieces of information, some is missing or incomplete

9 Possible Objects and Materials
You want to make a new line of jewelry. Using your knowledge of properties which material (gold, silver or platinum) would you choose and why? You want to make a skateboard. Using your knowledge of properties, which material (wood, plastic or carbon fiber) would you choose and why? You want to make a better cell phone screen. Using your knowledge of properties, which material (plastic, glass or gorilla glass) would you choose and why?
