1 WGE Extended Bureau Meeting LRTAP Convention, Geneva, 20 March 2017
Coordination Centre for Effects Call for data Preliminary Results Jean-Paul Hettelingh, Max Posch, Jaap Slootweg, Anne-Christine Le Gall WGE Extended Bureau Meeting LRTAP Convention, Geneva, 20 March 2017

2 Acknowledgements The National Institute for Public Health and The Environment (RIVM) gratefully acknowledges additional funds provided by: France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway and The Nordic Council of Ministers, in support of final CCE tasks to be performed in 2017, as noted by the Executive Body at its 36th Session (Geneva, December 2016).

3 Status of results of the CCE call for data on 17 March 2017

4 “Classical” critical loads
…Intended for use by EMEP-CIAM in TFIAM

5 2017 critical loads for eutrophication: NFC submissions
Protecting 95% of ecosystems Protecting 50% of ecosystems

6 European database of critical loads for eutrophication 2017 vrs 2015 NFC data + CCE backgrounddata for other Parties Protecting 95% Protecting 50 % Protecting 5 % 2017 2015

7 2017 critical loads for acidification: NFC submissions
Protecting 95% of ecosystems Protecting 50% of ecosystems

8 European database of critical loads for acidification
2017 2015 Protecting 95 % Source: CCE SR 2015, Fig (incl. revised French NFC data) Protecting 50 % Protecting 5 %

9 “Biodiversity” critical loads
…for review…

10 Define critical/acceptable value of index … and simplify
4 numbers (CLs): 0 ≤ CLNmin ≤ CLNmax and 0 ≤ CLSmin ≤ CLSmax

11 NFC submission of critical loads of Biodiversity, protecting 95% of the NFC-specific habitat areas
For sulphur (if N-dep is small) For nitrogen (if S-dep is small)

12 European database of critical loads of biodiversity NFC data + CCE backgrounddata for other Parties For nitrogen, Protecting 95% For sulphur, Protecting 95%

13 What if no Parties would have submitted data…
What if no Parties would have submitted data…? European database of critical loads of biodiversity Using CCE backgrounddata for all Parties… For sulphur, Protecting 95% For nitrogen,

14 What “biodiversity data” is included in the CCE-Alterra European Background Database
About 2.7 million sites distributed over… …about 1.9 million km2 of habitats… …with data on about 419 plant species… …distributed over 23 habitats … Of these, 6 habitats (H6510, H9410, H6430, H9150, H9100, H9190) cover about 1,2 million km2 …With data on about 113 typical species

15 Typical species for habitat H6510; “Low land hay meadows”
Source of pictures: Various via Internet

16 Preliminary Conclusions and Recommendations
13 Parties submitted critical loads for eutrophication and acidification Recommendation to EMEB/WGE3 to consider this update for implementation in GAINS 5 Parties (France, Germany, Netherlands, Switserland and Italy) submitted critical loads of biodiversity CCE is compiling a European Background database of critical loads of biodiversity At the 33rd TF M&M (Wallingford, 3-6 April 2017) the application of this data base needs to be reviewed and recommended to EMEP/WGE3 A further update of these conclusions and recommendations are prepared for the 33 rd TF M&M, TFIAM (Paris 2-3 May 2017), EMEP/WGE-3 and Finally at EB37 as appropriate A CCE Final Report 2017 is in preparation to document results of the call for data, a summary of the database structure and tentative findings of scenarion specific scenario assessments (CCE FR 2017, in prep.).
