5 What can you predict about how the US will respond to the crisis?
The ‘Migrant Mother’ 1936 Taken of a lady and 6 of her 10 children having broken down on the side of the road. The TERA camp she had been at was failing, and the people there were starting to starve. The husband had lost his job in 1930 – and died two years later. How does this phot show the vulnerability of women during the Depression? What can you predict about how the US will respond to the crisis?

Read Page 64 + The article Using the blank sheet of paper, think of as many ways to describe the situation for women in the Great Depression. Put them into a spider graph. Now think how the New Deal affected this – add to the graph in a different coloured pen. Create a Key for your notes.

10 Read page 65 1) What was the significance of Federal legislation during the war? 2) Who benefitted from the situation after 1945? 3) What had changed by wars end? 4) What difficulties did post-war employment present for women?

Remember: This question requires you to consider all the possible effects of the war on the lives of women, and in which sections of society.
