1 Rhetorical Analysis and Growth Mindset
Week 2

2 Reminders Office hours: Tuesday (1-4) and Wednesday (8-12)
Rm 406 Need (!) textbook (First-Year Writing, , 11th Edition) Need to use Word documents when uploading to Blackboard (no Pages or Google Documents) No assignment due this Friday.

3 Greeting: Good morning, good afternoon, etc. (Ms. Drazan, Professor Drazan, etc.) Specific question, concern/context: think of time/day when sending . Give me context so I know it is not an emergency. Please end with your name. Please, please, please tell me what section you are in.

4 Review of Rhetorical Analysis
Analyzing (not just what, but HOW) the rhetoric used by the writer. Identify specific (no general) audience Identify purpose (persuade/convince) Identify rhetorical choices used by writer to persuade/convince specific audience Determine if writer was effective with purpose

5 Helpful Ways to Identify Audience
Check where article was published. Who reads that publication? Who is able to make the change the writer wants? Who needs to make the change the writer wants? Does the writer identify the audience him/herself?

6 Helpful Ways to Identify Purpose
Check for “clues” in title of article. What problem/issue does the writer address? What is the writer’s solution for the problem/issue? Check the introduction/conclusion.

However, instead of I/You put yourself in the audience’s shoes. Read articles at least twice. Highlight/take notes. Think of what rhetorical choices would be effective with the specific audience.

11 (Informal) Homework DO NOT turn in on Blackboard.
Bring to class next Tuesday (Sept. 12) on piece or paper or printed. Read all three articles (yes, all of them). Identify audience and purpose (for each one). Write brief summary of each article (5 sentences).

12 Summary Chapter 6, pgs. 129-133 (FYW)
Need to identify who/what you are summarizing. Concise. Main points. Be fair and accurate. Give credit to author. Recap of main ideas in text (big picture). Summaries need to be all in your own words. No quotes.
