2 Who are we? We are an association publishing house, focused on research publication and with some practitioner content IWA is a charity with around 10,000 members worldwide Our goal is to spread knowledge about the world’s most valuable resource – water We publish 14 journals – c2,400 articles annually And c30 books each year – with a backfile of c800 titles Books are a key mechanism for reaching our practitioner audiences worldwide, often in Low Income Countries

3 1 Tentative steps on the road to Open Access book publishing
So, Rod and Hakan have given you an overview of where we stand in the market and what our areas of strength are within the portfolio. I would like to talk now on how our proposition compares to those of our competitors. For the sake of time, I want to only focus only on those things that, in my opinion, are key to the success of a medicine & health science portfolio.

4 What have we done so far? First free access book in 2009, fully OA book in 2013 We have an online collection of 31 open books: 23 free-to-view 7 fully OA 1 non-OA book with 5 OA chapters More in the pipeline: 3 fully OA in production (including two Spanish translations) 3 fully OA with contracts pending 4 more OA books proposed Five most downloaded books all free to view – 20k+ downloads for one title

5 Fair fees: Book Publication Charge (BPC) for typical book of 140 pages $8,750 / £7,000 / €8,250 and for chapter of 15 pages $1,250 / £1,000 / €1,175
