1 On Target? Do this on your Warm Up worksheet!
No warm up this week! Be ready to go when the bell rings 

4 Energy Pyramid Quizzes
If you got below a 70%, you can come in and retake your quiz for a better grade I’m available during lunch all week, and after school today, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday Friday is the last day to do so!

5 What percentage of the oak trees’ energy is available to the caterpillar with 7,500 kcal of energy?
3800% 2.6% 0.03% 11%

6 What percentage of the oak trees’ energy is available to the caterpillar with 7,500 kcal of energy?
3800% 2.6% 0.03% 11%

7 What percentage of the oak trees’ energy is available to the caterpillar with 7,500 kcal of energy?
3800% 2.6% 0.03% 11% To find percent: Part Whole X 100 =

8 What percentage of the oak trees’ energy is available to the caterpillar with 7,500 kcal of energy?
3800% 2.6% 0.03% 11% To find percent: Part Whole X 100 = 7,500 285,000 X 100 = 2.6%

9 Round-up is a chemical toxin used to kill various organisms
Round-up is a chemical toxin used to kill various organisms. Round-up was sprayed on the weeds surrounding the oak tree. Where do you expect the greatest accumulation of the toxin? Tree Bird Caterpillar Hawk

10 Round-up is a chemical toxin used to kill various organisms
Round-up is a chemical toxin used to kill various organisms. Round-up was sprayed on the weeds surrounding the oak tree. Where do you expect the greatest accumulation of the toxin? Tree Bird Caterpillar Hawk Birds and hawks can fly away, and caterpillars can crawl away, but trees are stuck and are at the source of the toxin

11 Explain why the population of caterpillars is always larger than the populations of top carnivores, such as hawks. Use calculations based on the given kilocalories.

12 Explain why the population of caterpillars is always larger than the populations of top carnivores, such as hawks. Use calculations based on the given kilocalories. Caterpillars obtain a higher percentage of the energy from the main source, the oak tree. As the tropic levels get higher, less energy is available to the organisms at higher levels. Because caterpillars get more energy from the oak tree, they have more energy to sustain higher populations compared to the hawks, who only get 0.01% of energy from the oak tree ,000 7,500 285,000 X100 = 2.6% X100 = 0.01%

13 Explain why a vegetarian diet is considered a more energy-efficient diet for humans than one based on beef, chicken, or pork.

14 Explain why a vegetarian diet is considered a more energy-efficient diet for humans than one based on beef, chicken, or pork. Eating plant-based foods gives you a more direct source of energy. Beef, chicken, and pork are a part of higher trophic levels, and energy is lost as you move up the trophic energy pyramid.

15 Back page: Examples from Water, Carbon, nitrogen cycle
Most people lost points here from lack of detail. I needed to see examples and why they counted as examples!

16 Which of the following things should be included in a field study?
Methods for collecting data (controlled variables) Logical steps Record environmental conditions Condition to be compared (manipulated variable) Answer the question Data: high and low Data to be collected (responding variable) Difference: analyze data (do math!) Record measurements Scientific reasoning Repeat observations

17 Field Study Question Attributes:
Attribute Name Description Method for Collecting Data (Controlled Variable) The procedure states or implies a consistent sampling strategy or technique (e.g., keep the sampling area the same, count at the same time every day). Conditions to be Compared (Independent/ manipulated Variable) Only one independent variable (state variable from question) is identified or implied in the procedure or data table (if given). The independent variable must have at least three conditions to be credited. Data to be Collected (Dependent/ responding Variable) The data collected to answer the field study question (state variable from question) is identified or implied in the procedure or data table (if given). Record Measurements The procedure states or implies measurements are recorded. Attribute Notes: If artificial data for the responding variable is given, this attribute cannot be credited. The phrases take measurement or to count cannot be used to mean record. Observations are Repeated More than one observation for all conditions is planned, or implied in a data table, (e.g. Go to each location 2 times, sample multiple regions in the same area.) Record Environmental Conditions Procedure identifies or implies recorded observations of at least one local environmental condition that might have an effect on the focus variables (e.g., record air temperature, date). Logical Steps The steps of the procedure are detailed enough to repeat the procedure effectively (examples of illogical steps: no ending time indicated, no limitation to the sampling area is given, recording vague data or results).

18 Scoring Rubric: Scoring Rubric for: New Field Study (page 1 of 3)
Performance Description # of Attributes A 2-point response demonstrates the student understands the Content Standard INQB: Scientific progress requires the use of various methods appropriate for answering different kinds of research questions, a thoughtful plan for gathering data needed to answer the question, and care in collecting, analyzing, and displaying the data. Item Specification 2: Describe a plan to answer a given question for a field study. 6–7 A 1-point response demonstrates the student has partial understanding of the Content Standard. 3–5 A 0-point response demonstrates the student has little to no understanding of the Content Standard. 0–2
