History Geography Government Economics Culture

3 What is the GLOBAL COMMUNITY?
Global Community – the way all the countries and people of the world interact with one another. We will learn how America is connected to the global community through the 5 themes of geography.

4 Theme #1 - History

5 What is history? History is a record of the past.
We can use many different sources to study history. Written records Primary source – firsthand account (eyewitness) Secondary source – secondhand account (hearsay) Oral tradition (word of mouth) Artifacts (items from the past) Declaration of Independence and Constitution- documents Lesson- How the US grows into 50 states

6 “Why Study History?” video
Based on the video, write at least 4 reasons why we study history. Understanding the past helps us understand the present Keeps us informed about current events Helps us see different perspectives Strengthens critical thinking find patterns and trends Use info from the past to solve problems in the future Understand other cultures It’s fun!

7 How does history connect the United States to global society?
We can learn how America has interacted with other countries over time Learn why people from other countries came to the United States Historical events that happen in America affect the rest of the world too

8 Theme #2 - Geography

9 What is geography? Geography – study of the places, features, and people on Earth and how they affect one another 2 main types Physical Geography – focuses on the Earth’s natural features Human Geography – focuses on people

10 What do we use to study geography?
Maps Surveying Equipment Tools to measure distance and elevation GPS imaging Can take photos of the Earth from space

Clouds Continents Oceans Thunderstorms City Lights Lights in the atmosphere Write at least 2 things on Earth you could see from space in the video.

12 How does Geography connect the USA to global society?
Natural resources in the USA affect how we trade with other countries Physical features of the USA affect the reasons people choose to live here Location of the US affects how we act toward other countries

Are we more safe then other countries? What are the positive and negatives of our geographic location? How does our geography/location influence the US today? Isolated? + or -

14 Theme #3 - Government

15 What is government? Government – systems for organizing people and making laws- Constitution- law of our land Every country has some form of government There are many different kinds of governments in the world

16 Types of government video
Name the 3 main types of government from the video. Democracy- United States form of Gov. All people have some decision-making power- voting Washington D.C. 3 Branches- explain Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness: freedoms Oligarchy A small group of people can make decisions Autocracy Only one person makes all important decisions

17 How does government make the USA part of a global community?
The USA is a representative democracy (indirect democracy) We vote for leaders who make decisions based on what we tell them Government decides how we interact with governments from other countries around the world

18 Theme #4 - Economics

19 What is economics? Economics –how people distribute resources by exchanging money, goods, and services. resources –useful materials in a society Goods – items you can buy Services – helpful acts performed by people Trading w/ other countries

20 Types of Economies Video
Write the 4 main types of economies. Traditional Economy Everyone pitches in to help each other Command Economy Government controls the whole economy Market Economy Consumers control the economy without any help for the government Mixed Economy Government and consumers share control

21 How does economics connect the USA to the global community?
Global Economy – how countries exchange money, goods, and services with one another USA buys different goods from different countries Sells goods to other countries too Economics often decides how countries get along American Revolution: fought England for control of the economy

22 Theme #5 - Culture

23 What is culture? Culture – characteristics that are shared by groups of people Knowledge Beliefs/Religion Traditions Art/music/sports Language Values Food Customs (how people act)

24 How does culture connect the USA to the global community?
The United States has a multicultural society Cultural Exchange People from all around the world contribute part of their culture to the USA American traditions, art, music, and beliefs have spread to other places in the world Diverse
