Think about this… You can’t touch it, but it affects how you feel. You can’t see it, but it’s there when you look at yourself in the mirror. You can’t hear it, but it’s there every time you talk about yourself. What is this important but mysterious thing?

2 Self – Esteem – Definition (COPY)
How you feel about yourself and the ability to like & respect yourself.

3 Self-Esteem How others see you or treat you and how you see yourselves can have a big impact on your self esteem. It’s not about thinking you’re perfect – because nobody is – but knowing that you’re worthy of being loved and accepted.

4 A Person with Good/High Self-Esteem….(COPY)
Feels good about themselves. Face stresses of daily living. Gets involved in activities and makes friends. Takes good care of themselves and tries their best. Accepts their weak points and knows their strengths.

5 Why is Self-Esteem Important?
Having good self-esteem is the ticket to making good choices about your mind and body. If you think you’re important, you’ll be less likely to follow the crowd if they’re doing something dumb or dangerous. If you have good self-esteem, you know that you’re smart enough to make your own decisions. You value your safety, your feelings, your health – your whole self! Achievements-like getting good grades, making the all-star team – See yourself in a positive way, feel proud of what you’ve done and confident that there’s a lot more you can do!.

Don’t think highly of themselves Seem to criticize themselves too much Don’t always feel very good about yourself or don’t think you’re important

8 A Little on Low Self-Esteem…
Some kids have good self-esteem but then something happens to change that… If a kid moves & doesn’t make friends right away at the new school, they might start to feel bad. Kids whose parents divorce. They may feel unlovable or to blame for the divorce. (IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT!) A kid who feels too fat or too thin may start thinking they are not good enough.

9 Improving Self-Esteem
Have confidence. Accept encouragement. Set goals. Find friends that support and encourage you. Avoid worrying about hurtful remarks or looks. Put them behind you and move on. Exercise How can other people help??? Encourage them, help them get back on track!
