3. Chesapeake and North Carolina colonies grew prosperous exporting tobacco
The colonies of Virginia and North Carolina had tobacco based economies.
Tobacco was a labor intensive product Plantations often made use of indentured servants and African slaves to do the work.
Indentured Servants- were men and women who signed a contract by which they agreed to work for a certain number of years in exchange for transport to Virginia, food and shelter.
Middle Passage- African slaves were brought over to work plantations on a densely packed ship traveling along what's called the middle passage

4. New England colonies developed around small towns with family farms
New England colonies flourished from small family farms owned by Puritans exercising subsistence farming.
Puritan Work Ethic- a concept emphasizing hard work and diligence within the life of a Christian
Subsistence farming- Farmers focused on only growing enough food for themselves and their families
The Puritans believed they were part of Gods divine plan for humans. This belief created a social hierarchy with the Puritans being above everyone else. This ultimately led to enactment of the blue laws.
Blue Laws- A variety of laws passed by the Puritans designed to regulate the conduct of all members in society.

5. The middle colonies grew diverse cultures through economic success
The bread basket colonies or the middle colonies lived off of fishing, farming, and an abundance of corn and wheat.
The quakers led by William pen were a group of Christians with the common ideology of kind heartedness and giving to the community. Because of their kindness they were tolerant to other religious beliefs. This also brought many migrants speaking religious refuge.

6. Colonies of the southern most Atlantic coast and the British West Indies developed plantation economies based on exporting stable crops
These colonies used long growing seasons to produce cash crops rather than subsistence farming like the New England colonies did.
Cash Crops- an agricultural crop grown for sale to return a profit. Cash crops at this time included Rice and Sugar.
They too relied on enslaved Africans for agriculture, and at this time they made up the majority of the population in these areas. Because of the concentration of Africans, they began developing their own culture and religion.
Ring Shout- where worshippers shuffling and stomp their feet while clapping their hands and move in a circle
Spirituals – Songs enslaved Africans sang often including the hardships they went through
