1 The Election of 1800

2 In 1800… The country has 16 states. The U.S. is becoming diverse:
Industry grows in the North. Farms and small businesses grow in the South and West.

3 Problems for Adams The U.S. and France are involved in the “Quasi War.” The Alien and Sedition Acts are restricting liberty. Slave rebellions take place in the South. Parts of the U.S. are threatening to secede.

4 Federalists vs. Republicans
Support John Adams Promote industry and foreign trade. Favor Great Britain Support Thomas Jefferson Support small farmers and craftsmen. Favor France

5 A Lack of Trust Federalists believe that the Republicans support bloody revolutions. Republicans believe the Federalists want an American monarchy.

6 The Votes are In! Adams = 65 electoral votes
Jefferson = 73 electoral votes Jefferson ties with Republican Aaron Burr. The House of Representatives steps in to break the tie. Jefferson wins by one vote!

7 So Why Do We Care? Federalists give up power peacefully.
Proves citizens can elect their own leaders. Leads to the 12th Amendment: The President and Vice President are elected separately.
