Assessment of wind power resource in Belgrade region

Belgrade region is characterised by good prerequisites, other then significant wind power potential, for the perspective construction of the wind farms: Accessible terrain (land) and low building/construction cost of the wind turbine, for wind farm development, Cheap transport (considering the transport of the large wind turbines) of the wind turbines from the countries of the European Union (using the River Danube), Good conditions for wind farms connection to the power network, Good urban conditions for wind farm construction at sites in the wider region of Belgrade. In this study, a map of wind energy potential for Belgrade region has been presented. Methodolgy The map of wind energy potential for Belgrade region has been estimated using the WAsP software, through the application of methodologies from the European Wind Atlas. The one year ten-minute input wind speed data used for the estimation was obtained from the three measuring units, mounted especially for this study on the telecommunication masts that are located in the wider Belgrade area. Average annual wind speed map of Belgrade area (35×35) km at 80 m height above ground level Measuring point II - 63 m a.g.l Measuring point I - 38 m a.g.l Belgrade Measuring point III - 35 m a.g.l Validation of the wind resoruce map Conclusions Wind speed in the wider Belgrade area is of class III. Wind rose is characterized by two dominant wind directions: south-east wind, blowing about 2800 hours/year and north-west wind, blowing about 3400 hours/year. In the wider Belgrade area there are micro-locations with technically exploitable wind energy potential, where it is possible to build about 100 MW of wind farms.
