5 Who were these African American troops?
After long preparations, the Rough Riders and 17,000 other Americans arrived in Cuba in June Seeing that Cuban fighters lacked the strength or weapons to force the Spanish out of fortified cities and harbors, Roosevelt and his Rough Riders decided to capture Santiago, a major city. To do this, they had to capture nearby San Juan Hill, from which Spanish forces were able to defend the city. The attacking force included the Rough Riders and African American troops from several regiments. Up the hill the troops charged, braving Spanish fire. “They walked to greet death at every step, many of them, as they advanced, sinking suddenly or pitching forward but others waded on, stubbornly, forming a thin blue line that kept creeping higher and higher up the hill,” wrote an American reporter. “It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bull-dog courage.” TCI Textbook 2014. 16 Created on September 5, 1900 by J.S. Pughe
Illustration shows a huge Uncle Sam getting a new outfit made at the "McKinley and Company National Tailors" with President McKinley taking the measurements. Carl Schurz, Joseph Pulitzer, and Oswald Ottendorfer stand inside the entrance to the shop and Schurz is offering Uncle Sam a spoonful of "Anti-Expansion Policy" medicine, a bottle of which each is carrying. On the right are bolts of cloth labeled "Enlightened Foreign Policy" and "Rational Expansion." The strips on Uncle Sam's trousers are labeled "Texas, Louisiana Purchase, Alaska, Florida, California, Hawaii, [and] Porto Rico.” Created on September 5, 1900 by J.S. Pughe

17 T A C O S Print shows Uncle Sam in the role of the "Noble Hero" in a melodrama, defending a young woman labeled "Cuba" from the "Heavy Villain" labeled “Spain". Created by Charles Jay Taylor on June 3, 1896.

18 T A C O S Cartoon created by William Carson shows hilariously depicts how the United States misread the reaction of the Fillipino people when it acquired the Philippines following the Spanish American War

19 T A C O S 'The News Reaches Bogota.' Cartoon, 1903, by W.A. Rogers from the New York 'Herald,' showing President Theodore Roosevelt rudely presenting Colombia with the fait accompli of his Panama Canal Zone treaty with the new republic of Panama.

20 T A C O S Responding to President Wilson’s proclamation of strict neutrality on August 4, 1914, editorial cartoonist William Allen Rogers portrayed Uncle Sam trapped and unable to move by the chevaux de frise of bayonets. While Wilson believed his leadership called for neutrality during the Great War, his policies paralyzed government officials who needed to control shipping, troop movements, and the rescue of Americans from Europe. On July 28, 1914, days before this cartoon was published, the Austro-Hungarian government declared war on Serbia and the European continent quickly became embroiled in war. William Allen Rogers August 9, 1914.

21 Louis Dalrymple January 25, 1899
T A C O S Print shows Uncle Sam as a teacher, standing behind a desk in front of his new students who are labeled "Cuba, Porto Rico, Hawaii, [and] Philippines"; they do not look happy to be there. At the rear of the classroom are students holding books labeled "California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, [and] Alaska". At the far left, an African American boy cleans the windows, and in the background, a Native boy sits by himself, reading an upside-down book labeled "ABC", and a Chinese boy stands just outside the door. A book on Uncle Sam's desk is titled "U.S. First Lessons in Self-Government”. Louis Dalrymple January 25, 1899
