3 Religion & Prejudice

4 Aims & Objectives: To acquire a knowledge of the Key terminology used in this module To identify different types of prejudice in our society and how this discrimination is manifested. To consider the causes of prejudice

5 I think that women should stay at home so when I get married I wont let my wife work.
Sexism: Is prejudice because of someone’s gender. Often this has been manifested in the jobs that society sees as being acceptable / unacceptable for women (mainly) to do. Still today, despite laws to the contrary, women are often paid less than men even when doing an identical job. Often in the home it is still the woman who does the majority of the housework.

6 I think all young people these days are layabouts so I wont have them working for me.
Ageism: This is prejudice against someone because of their age. This is not always against the elderly but the young also. Examples could be when applying for jobs. The elderly could be considered not to be fit enough or not up to date. The young could be seen as not having enough maturity or gravitas for a position. Not all age restrictions are forms of discrimination. (Ag 10 for criminal responsibility)

7 I saw two men holding hands, it’s unnatural, so I thumped one of them as they walked past.
Homophobia: This is prejudice against people who are attracted to those of the same gender as themselves. Examples could include. Ostracism from groups and at times verbal and physical violence. Sometimes people have had to hide or have hidden their sexuality in order to avoid this prejudice.

8 Me and my mate nicked this guy’s prayer hat ‘cos religion is a joke
Religious Prejudice: Many people face prejudice because of their religion. This has happened throughout history. In Germany the Jews were forced to wear the Star of David to mark them out. This was then followed by the Holocaust. In Britain today often intolerance appears to be shown towards followers of Islam. This has been in part due to Islamic terrorism. Many people argue that Religion can also be seen as the cause of much discrimination. (Homophobia, roles of women, Lifestyle choices)

9 Black people are uncivilised
Black people are uncivilised. When I see a black footballer I make monkey chants and threw bananas Racism: Is the belief that the colour of a person’s skin or their race affects their ability. It is also the belief that some races are better than others. The slave trade was based upon the belief that black people were inferior to white people and therefore were not entitled to any Rights.

10 Why do people talk to the person pushing my wheelchair as though I am stupid or not there
Disability: Two main areas of disability Physical and Mental. The physically disabled face difficulties often due to access of buildings / information. People with learning difficulties can often face difficulties in their studies. Dyslexia can sometimes be assisted by simply changing the font or the colour of the paper
