6 Typical class/lab session:
25 – 35 minute lecture – Laptops closed Each lecture covers basic concepts and several sample problems from that day’s section/s. Lecture slides of each day’s content are available online for preview or printing to take notes, or to review after class or before tests/quizzes. Laptops must remain CLOSED during the lecture portion of the class. 15 – 25 minutes to start online homework Teacher and student TA will circulate to answer questions. Homework assignment is due at the start of the next day’s class. Homework on Thursday’s lecture section is due the following Monday. Lab Hour – following class hour All students move into the MathTLC Open Lab, and swipe their ID cards. Students then continue working on the homework assignment. Tutors will circulate the Open Lab and be available to answer questions.

7 Lab Hour Requirement: At the end of each class, you will move into the open lab JHSW 203 To earn your half point of attendance you need one of the following: ≥90% on current homework Actively working on assignments the whole lab hour It is your responsibility to have a TA check off your attendance point before you leave the open lab.

8 Classroom Etiquette: Please be mindful of helping create a distraction-free learning environment for all of us in the classroom. Laptops should be closed when the day’s lecture begins. When lecture is finished your instructor will ask you to open your laptop to work on the day’s homework. During class work time, it is not appropriate to use your computer for communications, instant messaging, general web surfing or similar activities that are not directly related to the current lecture or assignment. All electronic devices including cell phones, tablets, iPods, headphones, etc. should be out of sight and turned OFF during the entire class session, including while working on homework. CELL PHONES MAY NOT BE USED AT ALL, EVEN AS CALCULATORS, IN MATH 90 CLASSROOMS OR IN THE MATH TLC TUTOR LAB.

9 Notebooks/note taking:
Written notes should be taken during lectures You should have a notebook that you use specifically for this class, and bring it to every class session. You should also have a page in your notebook for each homework assignment and practice quiz/test. For each online problem, you should write the problem in your notebook, then show all steps of the work you do to get the answer. These notes will be very helpful to you in studying for tests and quizzes, and you’ll also want to be in the habit of showing detailed work on problems. You’ll be turning in your written work on regular tests and quizzes so that we can look over your work for possible partial credit since the computer grading is “all or none” on each questions.

10 Homework guidelines: Each homework assignment is due at the start of class on the class day after the section is assigned. All deadlines are given in the calendar and in the on-line assignment list. You’ll have time to start each day’s homework in class after the day’s lecture and during your lab hour, and there’s help available in the open lab next door 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Each homework assignment is designed to take the average student one to two hours. Expect to spend an average of at least 6 hours a week on homework outside of class. Homework assignments can be completed on any computer with internet access, not just in the lab or classroom. Homework deadlines can be extended by your instructor if circumstances warrant, but you should work ahead if you know you will miss class. Getting one or two days behind can make it very hard to catch up with the pace of the daily homework and quizzes in this class.

11 Calculators: A basic calculator will be available on your laptop for homework assignments, tests and quizzes. Any other calculators are not allowed on tests or quizzes, so you shouldn’t use one for your homework or practice exams. Calculator apps on cell phones, tablets, iPods and other electronic devices are not allowed either, so you shouldn’t rely on these for your homework or practice exams.

12 Test days: There will be a review lecture day before each test, and a practice test that is due at the start of the class on test day, instead of a homework assignment. There will be evening review sessions on the evening before tests 1-4. Test dates: Test 1: Tuesday, September 26th Test 2: Monday, October 23rd Test 3: Tuesday, November 21st (week of Thanksgiving!) Test 4: Tuesday, December 12th Final Exam: During Evaluation Week (Dec ; see your paper syllabus for exam day and time for this section)

13 Quiz and test guidelines:
Each test will have a practice version available online. Practice tests: count a small amount (about 5%) towards your grade. can be taken as many times as you want, with only your best score counting towards your course grade. are due at the start of class on the day of the exam. can be done anywhere you have internet access, just like homework. Tests: must be taken in class (or in the Math TLC testing lab with a proctor). must be taken on the day scheduled unless prior arrangements are made with your course instructor. are given online with a lockdown browser that blocks other screens. For all quizzes and tests except the Gateway Test, a basic calculator is included in the lockdown browser and will be accessible on your laptop during the test. A formula sheet will be handed out for use on tests. No other notes or stand-alone calculators or other devices are allowed on quizzes or tests. If a test is missed due to an unavoidable circumstance, a makeup may be given. Contact your instructor as soon as possible after the missed exam. Documentation of reason for absence may be required . If approved by your instructor, a makeup will be scheduled.

14 Academic Dishonesty Policy:
Any student discovered receiving assistance from any source, or giving assistance to another student on an exam or quiz, or cheating in any other way will be given a zero grade for that exam or quiz. A second infraction will result in a failing grade (F) for the class. See University policy at

21 Today’s Lab Hour: Syllabus Quiz (due tomorrow)
Open the syllabus quiz and make sure you can load it. Use the “Quizzes and Tests” menu button. Select the Syllabus Quiz Download the Pearson LockDown Browser. Click “Start Test” Follow onscreen directions to close any other open browser windows. If you keep getting a message that you aren’t in the lockdown browser, or that it may not be installed, ask for help from one of the TA’s. After you get the quiz to load and can see the first question, you can complete it during your lab hour. We want to make sure it loads for everybody before you leave your lab hour today. If you have any trouble getting the quiz and lockdown browser to work, make sure you get help from a TA. The lab is open until 8:00 tonight and opens at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. You may use your syllabus handout to answer the questions. When finished with all the questions, click “Submit”. You will be able to review your answers and retake the syllabus quiz until you get 100%. (This is the only quiz with retakes allowed, so take advantage of this one-time offer!)

22 The last 20 minutes of today’s class will be spent taking a basic arithmetic skills quiz.
This quiz will not count in your course grade, but it will help us assess your starting level for the upcoming class sessions. Next week’s 25 point Gateway test will be similar to this one. That quiz WILL count for credit, and you will have a practice version to try online before then. No calculators are allowed on this quiz or next week’s test. Please close your laptops and put away everything but a pencil. Show all of your work on the paper quiz sheet and write your final, simplified answer in the answer blank. The quiz must be turned in at the end of this class period. If you don’t get it all finished, just turn in what you have completed at the end of the allotted 20 minutes. If you finish early, you can move to the lab. If you haven’t completed the Syllabus Quiz, you can get a TA in the open lab to assist you. That quiz is your assignment due at the start of class tomorrow.

23 Remember to bring to class tomorrow:
After you finish your Gateway quiz, turn it in to the teacher or the TA. Go to the lab and work on the Syllabus Quiz. You should work for a 100% score, if you achieve at least a 90% score and you wish to leave, show a TA your score and then you’re free to go. Remember to bring to class tomorrow: Your laptop Note-taking materials Print-out of lecture slides (if you want to take notes on them). Reminder: Your online Syllabus Quiz should be completed before the start of class tomorrow.
