3 Teacher Check Box – Commitment to Learning.
2 Task Choose a Newly Emerging Economy. Expected Outcome Your chosen country highlighted on a world map with a range of reasons for why this country has been chosen. Skills Audit Geographic enquiry, place knowledge Newly Emerging Economies (NEE) are countries which are developing quickly and becoming globally significant – as you get older they will become more and more important. Below is a list of some NEEs you may not have studied before. NEEs – Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UAE. Your first task is to choose a country to focus on! Will it be somewhere you know something about already? Or somewhere you know nothing about? Colour in the country you are focusing on. Draw and colour in their flag in the rectangular box. Give a range of reasons around the map to explain why you have chosen this country. Teacher Check Box – Commitment to Learning. Challenge task: What do you hope to learn about this nation?

4 3 Task This is the Place Wheel, geographers use this to describe places to each other. Choose an image of the capital city of your chosen country which you can take from Google Images. Expected Outcome Show an understanding of different types of geography and use them to effectively describe your local area. Skills Audit Description, use of key vocabulary Where is this place? What are the key landmarks in this area? (Starting with the most important) What are the people in this place thinking and feeling? What are the physical features of this area? (climate, topography, biomes, unusual phenomena) What is ______________ like? Place an image here. How is this place affecting your senses? (sights, smells, sounds) What are the human features of this area? (settlements, industry, key architecture, population)

5 4 Task Produce a hand-drawn map of the country you have chosen to study. Expected Outcome A hand-drawn map which shows an understanding of key physical and human features. Skills Audit Mapping, evaluation, research, data presentation When maps are produced they represent the views of those who use and produce them, that is why the UK is in the centre of every map you use in school. This task is to produce a map which tells others about your chosen country. Begin by looking at a range of maps of your chosen country and then produce your own map inspired by what you have learnt about the geography of your chosen country. You could be highly informative, highly creative, or both! Parent Check Box – what Commitment to Learning score would you give this task? Parent signature Challenge task: Post your map online, ask for feedback and then use this to improve your map.

6 5 Task Research your chosen country. Expected Outcome A factfile about your chosen country containing information you have researched and selected which is appropriate to use in the factfile. Skills Audit Research, selecting data, using a range of sources, referencing, key vocabulary, development indicators Using secondary data is important for geographers in developing an understanding of the processes within a place we have not visited. Your task is to produce a factfile. The focus of the factfile should be on how developed your chosen country is. Begin by deciding the information which should be included as headings, each of these should be named using key vocabulary. Using the research skills you have already developed, fill the factfile with useful information about your chosen country which provides relevant information on their level of development. Self Check Box – what Commitment to Learning score would you give yourself for this task? Challenge task: Is your country more or less developed than the UK?

7 6 Task Make notes on a video about a social or environmental problem in your chosen country. Expected Outcome Choose an appropriate video on a social or environmental problem in your chosen country and make notes on the information in the video. Skills Audit Research, note-taking, place knowledge As these NEEs develop it can cause new problems for the population of the country such as soil erosion or slum housing. This task is about understanding how development can cause problems for an NEE nation. Watch a video about a social or environmental problem in your chosen country. During the video make notes under the following headings: What is the problem? Where in the country is the problem happening? What further social, economic and environmental effects is your problem causing? Please include the name of the video and the website (or other source) the video is from. In tutor time, discuss with a peer how severe the problem is in your chosen country compared to the problem they have researched in their chosen country. Challenge task: Watch a broader range of videos made by different organisations and people to expand your knowledge of problems within this country.

8 7 Task Identify solutions to the problems studied in task 6. Expected Outcome Identify an appropriate and sustainable solution to the problem you have researched. Skills Audit Research, considering sustainability, players An important skill for geographers is using examples in your work to support points you are trying to make. To begin with, make a list of many ideas as you can of ways to solve the problem from task 6 – they can be as creative and original as you like. Now re-read your list and try choose 3 ideas you feel are the most appropriate for the country you have chosen to study. Try research examples of these ideas in action in other parts of the world – how successful have they been? When you have researched all three choose the one idea which is most suitable for your chosen country and explain how different groups of people (players) in the country would respond to your idea. Peer Check Box – what Commitment to Learning score would you give this task? Challenge task: Is it possible to deal with any problem sustainably?

9 8 Task Explain how your chosen country is becoming more energy secure. Expected Outcome Research one method of renewable energy which is used in your chosen country. Skills Audit Research, labelled diagrams, comprehension Producing enough energy to meet the needs of a growing population is a huge challenge facing every country in the world, but particularly those with the fastest growing demand – NEEs. Research the energy mix for your chosen country – this is the range of sources used for energy such as coal and nuclear. Which is the largest renewable source in your chosen country? You are going to focus on this type. Produce a labelled diagram which explains how this method of producing energy works. Draw around the diagram the landscape in your chosen country in which this type of energy is produced – write a short sentence explaining why. Tutor Check Box – what Commitment to Learning score would you give this task? Challenge task: What are the negatives associated with this type of enegry?

10 9 Task MNC case study Expected Outcome
Produce a case study for an example of an MNC in your chosen country. Skills Audit Research, producing a case study, data presentation, revision technique MNCs are a key factor in development. MNC stands for Multi-National Company, these are companies which have a headquarters in one country and conduct business in many others at the same time. This can include call centres, manufacturing and retail. They bring positives such as skills and employment but also negatives such as low wages. Geographers are expected to have a wide place knowledge, however there are some places we know about in more detail to use as detailed examples in our work – these are called case studies. Your task is to produce a case study for an MNC in your chosen country. Name: Location: What the MNC does in your chosen country: Positives for your chosen country: Negatives for your chosen country: Present this in the box below as a flashcard – short, sharp pieces of information which can be revised quickly and easily. Challenge task: What other revision techniques could you use to present this information?

11 Teacher Check Box – Commitment to Learning.
10 Task Summarise what you have learnt about life in this country. Expected Outcome An opinion piece on life in your chosen NEE. Skills Audit Summarising learning, evaluating, writing for an audience Your chosen country is developing quickly and becoming more important in the global economy every day. NEEs will want to acquire talented young people from other nations to live and work in the future – could that be you? Based on what you have learnt, in 300 words, answer the following question as appropriate. “I would/would not like to live in _______________ (my chosen country).” (12 marks) Challenge task: Research life for British ex-patriates in your chosen country. Teacher Check Box – Commitment to Learning. Strength /12 Target

12 Task 10 Mark Scheme 1-4 A one-sided argument with generic statements related to the continent. No supporting evidence Poor spelling, punctuation and grammar. 5-8 Both sides of the argument considered and explanation as to why this would be a suitable place to live. A very simplistic and generalised conclusion. Some evidence used to support points but it may be limited to naming places without further exemplification Good spelling, punctuation and grammar. Some keywords used appropriately. 9-12 Both sides of the argument are considered and arguments for why this would be a good place to live are clearly explained. A conclusion clearly explains the extent to which you would/would not want to live here. Evidence is used to support all points. Good spelling, punctuation and grammar. Keywords used appropriately throughout.
