Warm-Up-Quick Write: In a paragraph describe what you know about laws. Be prepared to share-out. Using this PowerPoint break timer This PowerPoint slide uses images, custom animation, and timing to provide a countdown timer that you can use in any presentation. When you open the template, you’ll notice that the timer is set at 00:00. However, when you start the slide show, the timer will start at the correct time and count down by 1-minute intervals until it gets to 1 minute. At that point, it will count down in two 30-seconds intervals to 00:00. To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer. Open the presentation that will contain the timer. On the Slides tab, place your insertion point after the slide that will precede the timer. (Make sure you don't select a slide. Your insertion point should be between the slides.) On the Insert menu, click Slides from Files. In the Slide Finder dialog box, click the Find Presentation tab. Click Browse, locate and select the timer presentation, and then click Open. In the Slides from Files dialog box, select the timer slide. Select the Keep source formatting check box. If you do not select this check box, the copied slide will inherit the design of the slide that precedes it in the presentation. Click Insert. Click Close.

4 What can you expect? You will study laws at the state and national level You will study the people who write them, the media, and more importantly the issues around the laws You will produce your own law as a solution to a problem, and we will vote on them as a class

5 What to expect -Most of our time will be in class We will spend only 2 – 4 days of 15 in the library We have created a wiki page (tj-civics.wikipages.org) which will have the class resources and assignments Use your time wisely

6 What do we mean by Problem/Solution? (2pg Cornell Notes)
- After WWII African Americans began to wonder, “why fight for freedom overseas when there is no freedom at home?” - Example Segregation – the Public Policy of ensuring that blacks and whites were separate in everything from schools to jobs, from theaters to bathrooms. - Segregation was the problem many people identified, they needed a solution

7 Civil Rights Movement Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), was a court case that upheld the idea of “separate but equal” or that segregation was ok. (Problem) NAACP, a black civil rights group, targeted racist policies like segregation in schools. They won a court case in 1954, Brown v. Board of Ed. Showing that African Americans didn’t get equal treatment in school (Solution: Integrate Schools) How to integrate schools? Bussing, or forcing kids to go to other school to force racial integration

8 Civil Rights Act 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments prohibited some discrimination and granted some rights States found ways around these like the Poll Tax and Segregation Problem: States Prevent poor blacks from voting b/c of Poll Taxes

9 Solution 24th Amendment to US Const. (1964)
Civil Rights Act 1964, got Bi-Partisan, or both Political Party’s, support. Ex: of Legislation. Article I Section 4 & 8 of the Const. let Congress intervene in Elections and control interstate commerce, 14th & 15th Amend prevent discrimination How? After a century of discrimination Congress finally flexed its muscle and forced integration

10 Finally! An Unintended Consequence (something not meant to happen) African Americans, and many others, fought and gained political rights denied for centuries Like Lincoln, Barrack Obama was also a Senator from Illinois, but became a Lawyer before that. Interestingly without the events of another Illinois Lawyer Obama may never have had the chance.
