1 Neurotransmitter Review
-Take 5 five minutes and review your notes from last week. -You will have a 10-question quiz.

2 Quiz Answer the questions to the best of your ability

3 DON’T BE SERIOUS HAVE FUN
Journal 11/13/13 Unit 4: Neuroscience – Day 5 The Nervous System and Quiz Hint: Make more bellwork about GROUP DISCUSSION DON’T BE SERIOUS HAVE FUN VOTE WITH NOISES MOVE Think of the last time you were really happy. Try your best to explain the following: 1. How you felt physically (jittery, calm, etc) 2. Your facial expressions, movements, etc 3. Your cognitive evaluation of the situation (how did you know you were happy and how happy were you?) Be specific. “Most teachers waste their time by asking questions which are intended to discover what a pupil does not know whereas the true art of questioning has for its purpose to discover what the pupil knows or is capable of knowing.” - Albert Einstein Using this PowerPoint break timer This PowerPoint slide uses images, custom animation, and timing to provide a countdown timer that you can use in any presentation. When you open the template, you’ll notice that the timer is set at 00:00. However, when you start the slide show, the timer will start at the correct time and count down by 1-minute intervals until it gets to 1 minute. At that point, it will count down in two 30-seconds intervals to 00:00. To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer. Open the presentation that will contain the timer. On the Slides tab, place your insertion point after the slide that will precede the timer. (Make sure you don't select a slide. Your insertion point should be between the slides.) On the Insert menu, click Slides from Files. In the Slide Finder dialog box, click the Find Presentation tab. Click Browse, locate and select the timer presentation, and then click Open. In the Slides from Files dialog box, select the timer slide. Select the Keep source formatting check box. If you do not select this check box, the copied slide will inherit the design of the slide that precedes it in the presentation. Click Insert. Click Close.

4 Neuroscience Unit Essential Question
How are our emotions, perceptions, sensations, and behaviors generated and communicated throughout our body?

5 Examples of nervous system functions Flow Map of Nervous System
Today’s Objective: IWBAT describe the central nervous system and peripheral nervous systems and their functions. Examples of nervous system functions Notes Flow Map of Nervous System Scenarios Closing: Scenarios

6 Today’s Questions Why do you automatically pull your hand away from something hot “without thinking?” What makes your heart race when you are embarrassed? In an emergency, which part of your nervous system jumps into action? Why does eating or drinking something help calm you down or make you feel better?

7 The Nervous System

8 YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM The function of the nervous system is to gather and process information, produce responses to stimuli and coordinate workings of different cells.

9 Central Nervous System
Brain Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System Motor and sensory neurons

10 Central Nervous System
Brain Spinal Cord

11 Your Spinal Cord Spinal Reflexes: The spinal cord produces some behaviors on its own without any help from the brain.

12 Central Nervous System Scenarios
Can you give an example of a situation that would use your central nervous system? Be specific.

13 Peripheral Nervous System
Sends sensory information to and from the CNS Peripheral Nervous System motor and sensory neurons

14 Central Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System

15 Central Nervous System Somatic Nervous System
The Nervous System Central Nervous System _____________ ___________ Somatic Nervous System

16 Peripheral Nervous System Scenarios
Can you give an example of a situation that would use your autonomic and somatic nervous system? Be specific.

17

18 The Autonomic Nervous System is broken down AGAIN!
Sympathetic Nervous System Parasympathetic Nervous System Reacts during emotions and stress EXCITEMENT!!!!!! -Dilates pupils -Stimulates sweat glands -inhibits digestion -relaxes bladder wall (This is why if you are really scared, you might pee your pants). Operates during relaxed states and conserves energy CALMING DOWN! Constricts pupils Stimulates salvation Slows heartbeat Stimulates tear glands (Which is why you might cry after a period of excitement).

19 The Nervous System _____________ Somatic Nervous System ___________
Central Nervous System ___________ Somatic Nervous System ___________ Parasympathetic Nervous System

20 Test your knowledge Explain the following to your partner
Why does your heart race when you are talking to someone you have a crush on? What allows you to throw a baseball? Why don’t you have to think about breathing? Why does eating food or drinking water help calm you down? What’s one way to tell if someone is nervous?
