4 Tuesday, November 14th, 2017 Warm-up: ACT and Roots Crossword Puzzle Quiz (13 points) Define Imagery Group Project (Paper, Quotations, and Drawing Utensils) Students' Objective: Students will understand the power behind imagery and why an author might use imagery in his or her writing.

5 Define imagery Write in your own words the definition of imagery in your notebook. (2 minutes) Share with shoulder partner. (2 minutes) Volunteers will share definitions to class.  John Proctor: "you know in all of your black hearts that this be fraud... we will burn together" (The Crucible). 

6 Imagery language used to convey a visual picture; a central component of all imaginative literature and the chief element in poetry.   authors use imagery to make a description of something or someone concrete in the readers’ mind.  Today, we will focus on imagery in writing.

7 Imagery in The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe
Each group will get a piece of paper, drawing utensils, and one of the following quotations from the story. Draw what that quotation describes and label different parts of their drawing with different sections of their quotes.  In addition, define 3 to 5 unfamiliar vocabulary words from quote. Write on poster.  Each member must do a job. Leader of the group figure out what responsibility each group member will have.  Each group will present. 

8 Block Days: Wednesday & Thursday
Finish posters and then groups will share. During presentation students must explain why they drew what they did as well as read the quoted text.  Background information on Edgar Allan Poe. Page 402 Listen to audio of the first two paragraphs of The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe.  Students write in the notebook phrases that show vivid imagery. Summarize  Partner read up to "irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all" and write examples of strong imagery as you read.  Summarize

9 Taking Notes during reading
During partner read, write 5 examples of vivid imagery in your notebook. STOP reading at  "irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all" (408).  Summarize what you read with your partner.

11 Text Dependent Questions
Where does the story take place? What can you infer about Usher in his letter on page 406?  What has been the narrator's relationship with Roderick Usher in the past? 5 minutes to answer these questions in your notebook. 

12 Read/Annotate Article
Final Writing Exam is December 6th and 7th. Must understand the article. Use for evidence to support your argument.  December 6th: 2nd and 6th periods December 7th: 1st and 5th periods To keep in mind as you read and annotate:  What are the causes of mob mentality and explain the effects of the phenomena on society as a whole? Support your argument with evidence from the text.
