Conjunctions These conjunctions are very common words. They are very small, made up of three or fewer letters.
When to Use Each Conjunction:
Function Conjunction
To communicate addition (additive) and, or , nor, etc
To communicate contrast (adversative) but, yet, although,etc
To communicate cause (causal) so, thus, hence, therefore, etc
To communicate time sequence (temporal) then, next, after that, secondly, finally, etc

Conjunctions are used to join words, phrases, and independent clauses.
Examples of conjunctions in sentences:
Ex. All students but one attended the mid-term exam.
( but joins two words.)
Ex. All the students in the list but one with a sick leave have attended the mid-term exam.
(but joins two phrases.)
Ex. All students attended the mid-term exam, but one student with a sick leave was absent.
(but joins two independent clauses.)

Examples of conjunctions in sentences:
Ex. The time for the mid-term exam was announced to all class. Yet, one student didn’t show up.
(Yet can initially begin the second independent clause.)
Ex. The time for the mid-term exam was announced to all class, and yet one student didn’t show up.
(Yet can be receded by and to join two independent clauses.)

(however can initially begin the second independent clause.)

(however can be inserted in the middle of the second independent clause.)
Ex The time for the mid-term exam was announced to all class. One student didn’t show up however.
(however can appear at the end of the second independent clause.)

(the first independent clause starting with although can be also reversed with the second independent clause )

(the first independent clause starting with in spite of can be also reversed with the second independent clause )

More Conjunctions... These are likely used less often; however, they serve an important function.
