2 PUT YOUR PARENT SURVEY AND SYLLABUS CONTRACT IN THE HOMEWORK DRAWER FOR YOUR CLASS!! Grab both handouts from the back table!

3 BELL RINGER Choose one of the three prompts and write for 7 minutes:
1) If there was nothing standing in your way, what kind of person would you like to become? Tell about the challenges or obstacles that stand in your path now, but focus more on who you want to be, and why. 2) Tell about a time when you showed great courage. What was the situation, and how did you handle it? Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you could? 3) Tell about the moment when everything in your world changed. This can be about how it changed for the better or the worse. What was the catalyst? (What caused the change to begin?) How did you deal with it? How did it affect you and the people around you?

13 Bell Ringer Read the paragraph below. In your Bell Ringer Section you need to: Identify one example of indirect characterization and explain what we learn about the character Determine what conflict the character facing. Julie held up six different outfits in front of the mirror and pondered which would go best with her navy blue shoes, pastel eye shadow and the diamond earrings she’d already procured from her overflowing vanity. After ninety minutes of mixing and matching, and cell-phoning her sister three times for advice, Julie finally made up her mind. She’d give the navy blue skirt and white sweater a try, hoping Trent would love it.

How would you describe Roger? Be sure provide text evidence to support your response. Collect ideas from students… ask for answers and evidence.

How would you describe Roger? Be sure provide text evidence to support your response. Roger can be characterized as appreciative. At the end of the story, Roger “wanted to say something else other than ‘Thank you, m’am,” but he couldn’t muster up the courage. After attempting to steal from Mrs. Jones, he had the option to run. Roger decided to stay, however, because he was grateful that someone took the time to care for him. His desire to say more further demonstrates that he appreciated Mrs. Jones’ hospitality and willingness to give him the $10.

25 Partner Practice In partners, write a short answer response using R.A.T.E to the following question: What conflict is Mrs. Jones facing in the story “Thank You Ma’am?” Be sure to support your response with evidence from the text. You have 15 minutes!

These responses have the following characteristics. The idea is perceptive and reflects an awareness of the complexities of the text. The student is able to develop a coherent explanation of the idea by making discerning connections across the text. The text evidence used to support the idea is specific and well chosen. Overall, the evidence strongly supports the validity of the idea. The combination of the idea and the text evidence demonstrates a deep understanding of the text.

28 You own words! The idea is perceptive and reflects an awareness of the complexities of the text. The student is able to develop a coherent explanation of the idea by making discerning connections across the text. The text evidence used to support the idea is specific and well chosen. Overall, the evidence strongly supports the validity of the idea. The combination of the idea and the text evidence demonstrates a deep understanding of the text. Individually decipher meaning, come to a group consensus on meaning and translation, then develop poster board with symbols etc. Students will use post-its to vote on the best poster. The winning poster group will share with the class, and teacher will fill in any gaps. Once all classes have completed, each class will vote on the overall winning poster which will be the anchor chart for all classes to reference.
