5 Direct Characterization
Tells the audience about the character’s personality Ex. The patient girl and the silent boy were both well- mannered and obeyed their mother’s directions. What did we learn about the characters?

8 Conflict Man vs. Man Man vs. Self Man vs. Society Man vs. Nature
One character in the story has a problem with another character. Man vs. Self A character has trouble deciding what to do in a particular situation. Man vs. Society A character has a problem with some element of society (school, law, social norms, etc.). Man vs. Nature A character has a problem with some natural happening (thunder storm, tornado, snow storm, etc.). In your groups fill out your graphic organizer and create a situation that depicts the respective conflict!

For your Bell Ringer you must: Identify one example of indirect characterization and explain what we learn about the character What conflict is the character facing? Julie held up six different outfits in front of the mirror and pondered which would go best with her navy blue shoes, pastel eye shadow and the diamond earrings she’d already procured from her overflowing vanity. After ninety minutes of mixing and matching, and cell-phoning her sister three times for advice, Julie finally made up her mind. She’d give the navy blue skirt and white sweater a try, hoping Trent would love it.

You have 20 minutes!!!

22 How does the author characterize Roger
How does the author characterize Roger? Be sure to discuss the techniques used by the author. The author indirectly characterizes Roger through his actions. When Roger attempts to steal Ms. Jones’ purse, the author shows that he has never really learned right from wrong. When Ms. Jones takes him in, the author shows that even though he has never learned right from wrong, he still wants to be deemed as a trustful person. Roger tells the truth when asked a question, he doesn’t dash out the door of Ms. Jones house when given the chance, and he makes sure to always stay in eyesight of Ms. Jones while at her house. These actions show that even though Roger grew up without ever learning manners, and respect, he is willing to learn and become a better person.

23 Jigsaw Activity Working with your group member, put the pieces of the short answer in the correct order. You are answering the following: What do we learn about Mrs. Jones through the author’s use of indirect characterization? You have 10 minutes!

24 Partner Practice In partners, write a short answer response using R.A.T.E to the following question: What conflict is Ms. Jones facing in the story “Thank You Ma’am?” Be sure to support your response with evidence from the text. You have 15 minutes!
