Compare the effectiveness and suitability of different lifestyle improvement strategies

3 Task 2 - BRIEF You need to design a lifestyle questionnaire which you can use with your clients. Ask one of your clients to complete and return this questionnaire to you. You should then describe (P2), explain (M2) and evaluate (D1) the strengths and areas for improvement of your client’s lifestyle. You should also highlight the priority areas for change. Following this you should then provide (P3) a range of lifestyle improvement strategies and explain (M3) and analyse (D2) your recommendations.

Ask a client to complete this questionnaire Have a consultation with client to clarify / add info Write up results (1-2 A4 pages) – the strengths and areas for improvement of your client’s lifestyle, highlighting the priority areas for change describe (P2 – highlight all key factors)… explain (M2 – say why and compare to recommendations)… and evaluate (D1 – bring together and make a judgement)

6 Task 2 Following the lifestyle questionnaire you should then provide (P3) a range of lifestyle improvement strategies and explain (M3) and analyse (D2) your recommendations… P3 – give overview of strategies M3 – explain choices and suitability for your client D2 – positives and negatives of each strategy, considering the client

Many individuals find it difficult to incorporate forms of physical activity into their daily routine Numerous barriers can arise to why individuals cannot participate in PA Q. Identify the potential barriers to why individuals cannot take part in PA

Q. So how can we improve an individuals physical activity levels? Introduce/increase formal exercise e.g. gym, exercise class, sports team Increase activity levels: Walk rather than using transport Use the stairs rather than a lift

You need to remember that not all methods may be appropriate for all individuals!!!

16 NRT Nicotine gum When you chew nicotine gum, the nicotine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth Nicotine patches Nicotine patches work well for most regular smokers and can be worn round the clock (24 hour patches) or just during the day (16 hour patches) Microtabs These are small tablets containing nicotine which dissolve quickly under your tongue Lozenges Lozenges are sucked slowly to release the nicotine and take about minutes to dissolve Inhalators Inhalators look like a plastic cigarette. The inhalator releases nicotine vapour which gets absorbed through your mouth and throat. If you miss the 'hand to mouth' aspect of smoking, these may suit you Nicotine nasal spray The spray delivers a swift and effective dose of nicotine through the lining of your nose

17 Stop Smoking Some individuals try many different methods before they find one that works! If a lifestyle improvement strategy is for your client to stop smoking, you will need to find out if your client has already tried any methods Individuals may also require strategies to combat stress whilst attempting to stop smoking

18 Alcohol There are guidelines for individuals to follow to prevent alcohol consumption leading to health problems However many individuals exceed these guidelines Some individuals can become dependant or addicted to alcohol which can lead to serious health problems

19 Identify as many different measures as possible that can be used to combat alcoholism

Alternative e.g. hypnosis Self-help Groups/Services e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous, Talk to Frank Combating Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselling/therapy e.g. individual/group sessions carried out by trained therapists Medication e.g. methadone project Detoxification e.g. withdrawal under supervision

23 Diet Food diaries – raise awareness of foods eaten and timings, identify patterns Meal plans – follow specialised diets or patterns e.g. 6 meals a day/low fat diet Food preparation – e.g. no fried food Behaviour change – e.g. no food after 5pm
