1 Do Now /17/15 What would you call this animal? Are there any other names by which it goes by?

2 Pg 126 Classification On what basis did you initially separate organisms? After the initial grouping, what characteristics did you use as distinguishing factors? What did you separate by when you made 8 groups? In terms of shared characteristics, what happens as you make more subdivisions?

3 Article Questions What is the scientific name of the fern and why did they give it that name? Is the dingo a descendent of a wolf like the domestic dog? What are the unique characteristics of the dingo? What is the scientific name of the dingo?

4 Linnaean Classification

5 Taxonomy The study of the classification of living and extinct organisms.

6 Life is very diverse

7 The Challenge Biologists have identified and named approximately 1.5 million species so far. They estimate that between 2 and 100 million species have yet to be identified. So we classify

8 Carlos Linnaeus - (1707-1778) a Swedish physician who was interested in plants
He devised a systematic way of classifying all known kinds of organisms that we still use today.

9 Finding Order in Diversity
1. Why Classify? To study the diversity of life To organize and name organisms 2. Why give scientific names? Common names are misleading jellyfish silverfish star fish None of these animals are fish! Go to Section:

10 Origin of Scientific Names
By the 18th century, scientists realized that naming organisms with common names was confusing. Scientists during this time agreed to use a single name for each species. They used Latin and Greek languages for scientific names.

11 Binomial Nomenclature
Two name naming system Gave organisms 2 names Genus (noun) and species (adjective) Carolus Linnaeus Go to Section:

12 Binomial Nomenclature Rules
Rules for naming organisms 1. Written is Latin 2. Genus capitalized, species lowercase 3. Both names are italicized or underlined EX: Homo sapiens: wise / thinking man

13 Bionomial Nomenclature
Homo sapiens Lower case species name Capitalize Genus Name Italicize OR underline both Genus and species

14 Why Scientists Assign Scientific Names to Organisms
Some organisms have several common names This cat is commonly known as: Florida panther Mountain lion Puma Cougar Scientific name: Felis concolor Scientific name means “coat of one color” Go to Section:

15 Linnaeus’ classification system has seven levels.
Each level is included in the level above it. Levels get increasingly specific from kingdom to species.

16 Linnaeus’s System of Hierarchy
Least specific Kingdom Which of the following contains all of the others? Family c. Class Species d. Order Based on their names, you know that the baboons Papio annubis and Papio cynocephalus do not belong to the same: Family c. Order Genus d. Species Phylum Class Order Family Genus Most specific Species Go to Section:

17 Each level is more specific.
Hierarchical Ordering of Classification Grizzly bear Black bear Giant panda Red fox Abert squirrel Coral snake Sea star KINGDOM Animalia PHYLUM Chordata CLASS Mammalia As we move from the kingdom level to the species level, more and more members are removed. Each level is more specific. ORDER Carnivora FAMILY Ursidae GENUS Ursus SPECIES Ursus arctos Go to Section:
