2 Why classify? –To name organisms & group in logical order –Taxonomy: classification & naming of organisms Avoids confusion of common names Mountain Lion Cougar Puma Panther

3 Assigning scientific names –Early efforts at naming organisms Long, cumbersome names Ex: “Oak with deeply divided leaves with no hairs on their undersides and no teeth around their edges.”

4 –Binomial nomenclature - Linnaeus 2 part scientific name –1 st name capitalized, second lower case, all italicized –Ex: Ursus arctos
