RAZ Kids for Beginners Use this link:

2 Today we will… 1. Short spiel on the 5 W’s of RAZ Kids 10 minutes
2. Set up class roster & groups minutes 3. Create an assignment & see what it looks like when you go to score an assignment minutes 4. Take time for questions 10 minutes 5. ”Play” with RAZ & get any help needed 10 minutes 6. Survey & Closure

3 What? An online reading program that allows you to assign “just right” books to kids, in which they quiz to show proficiency in particular skills A “bank” of resources you can use in small or whole group instruction

4 Who? Kids K-5 Great for kids who need engaging nonfiction text on their level Less necessary for high level readers in 4th, 5th, but still a great supplement (more on this later)

5 When???? (The BIG question)
As an independent reading task during Daily 5 rotations As an assigned task in a small group Whole group as a lesson to target a particular skills/strategy Even at home for kids to read to self (if they have internet access)

6 Where? On iPads (app in Self Service) On computer In library/lab time
At home, too

7 Why?? Allows you to more specifically track what skills kids are struggling with (ex: vocabulary, main idea, etc.) Fun & engaging “just right” text for kids to move through to increase reading stamina Great resources to use as small group supplements for kids who need more reinforcement

8 Comprehension Skill Packs Graphic Novels/Classics Primary Top 3:
Two Parts Resources Upper Elem Top 3: Leveled Readers Comprehension Skill Packs Graphic Novels/Classics Primary Top 3: Comp. Skill Packs Decodable Readers Student Reading Portal 1. Reading Room 2. Level Up 3. Assignments 4. Incentives

9 Leveled Readers? Under Resources – 1st Tab
Find text in all levels, fiction/nonfiction Uses: Assign a child to a particular book Print out and use in small group Display and use to teach a whole group lesson

10 Comprehension Skill Packs
Under “Resources” then “Key Reading Skills” Find one page texts to support a specific grade level and skill (ex: problem and solution) Two passages per skill Uses: Whole group lesson (display on screen) Print and use in small group Give as an assessment after teaching the skill Use lower level text with readers struggling to see if they get the skill, but are having trouble because of text complexity

11 Graphic Novels & Classics
Under “Resources” then “Books” For your HIGHER readers (4-5 mostly) Uses: Engage high readers in independent text that might involve nonfiction (graphic novels) Do a novel study on a classic (Wind in the Willows, Call of the Wild) that are split up and given a “new” look

12 Decodable Books Under “Resources” then “Books”
Books to teach a word feature (vCe, short vowels, digraphs, vowel teams) Uses: Reinforce learning a new word feature in small group Word hunt – have students read during their independent Daily 5 and find words that match the feature they are learning

13 Helpful Hints: Classroom Roster Page is where you can create groups, turn off incentives, and set student levels I turn off the incentives till Friday Select a student, select “RAZ Plus” tab, and highlight assignment to customize the “Reading Room” You can take away resources too easy/hard, and limit what levels the kids can “browse”

14 Let’s Create a Roster and Groups
Go to “Class Roster” and then you can manage your students Groups are useful if you assign books based on guided reading groups Students can be part of multiple groups

15 How to Create an Assignment
Browse resources (I have a level in mind for a group, and I decide if I want fiction or nonfiction) Then, click “assign” and pick students and must do’s (listen/read/quiz)

16 Questions? What’s still “blurry” about RAZ?
