Outcomes: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to compare and contrast colonial Virginia to colonial Maryland by hypothesizing about why people came/did not come

3 Motivation/Warm-up Identify reasons people left Europe/England to travel to the New World. Who is Baltimore and Maryland named after and why was the colony founded?

4 Discussion - “What Early Marylanders Were Like”
Where were early Marylanders from? What socio-economic class did most early Marylanders come from? How much education did early Marylanders have? How do researchers/historians know this? What was the life expectancy of an early Marylander? Why was alcohol in such demand?

5 Guided Practice Distribute “Position of the first 3 groups of settlers in Virginia” Examine the list of settlers who came to Virginia and hypothesize/infer about why certain individuals came/did not come

6 Discussion-APUSH Serving Time in Virginia Compare/contrast colonial Virginia to colonial Maryland Reasons for founding Differences in religion Chesapeake region-quasi separate but a part of the Southern region Early Marylanders

7 Cooperative Work Turn to your neighbor and identify the similarities and differences between the early Marylanders and early Virginians. You may use a Venn Diagram to organize your thoughts

8 Exit Ticket Compare and contrast the experiences, reasons for founding, and the way of life of the settlers of Jamestown and Maryland

9 Homework Skim Chapter 1 and read 1st 10 pages of chapter 2
