1 In his book Making Your Own Days, Kenneth Koch put it well when he said,
"poets think of how they want something to sound as much as they think of what they want to say and in fact it's often impossible to distinguish one from the other."

2 Tone Is an expression of the writer’s attitude toward a subject. Tone reflects the feelings of the writer. Ex. Serious, respectful

3 Mood Is the feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader. Ex. Creepy, threatening, sad

4 Theme Is the central idea or ideas the writer intends to share with the reader. The idea may be a lesson about life or about people and their actions. Most themes are not obvious and must be inferred by the reader.

5 The rose that grew from concrete
Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete? Proving nature's law is wrong it learned to walk with out having feet. Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air. Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else ever cared.

6 How does this poem make you feel?
What is the tone, mood, theme of this poem?

7 Homework Your goal tonight is to write a poem. Like “Rose” your poem should express your feelings, emotions and/or struggles about life.

8 Grown- Up My head is throbbing with the stress, Eyes sensitive to light. A kaleidoscope of colors, Thoughts and images expand and swirl. Being grown-up is like riding a never ending rollercoaster. Up bills, down work, upside down, never slows down. Sometimes I just want to get off. No one ever tells you being a grown-up can really suck!
